Beat Shazam Recap: June 3, 2019

In Beat Shazam’s third season, we’re up to Episode 3 and we’re joining host Jamie Foxx and deejay Corinne for another great hour of big song hits and big money for knowing their titles.

Here are the 3 teams:

  • Kevin & Kristina, husband & wife, from Hesperia in the Golden State (CA)
  • Rich & Mike, sanitation workers from Canton in the Buckeye State (OH)
  • Molly & Whitney, beauty queens from Madison in the Magnolia State (MS)

If you have not seen this episode and still plan to, STOP READING. The correct responses and scores after each song are in this recap.

Round 1 – Shazam Shuffle
First 4 are worth $2000 each. The last one (Fast Track) is worth $4000.
1. ONE HIT WONDERS: “Kung Fu Fighting” (Carl Douglas)
CA $0 OH $2000 MS $0
Everyone knew it. OH got it the fastest at 2.14
2. NEIL DIAMOND: “America”
CA $0 OH $4000 MS $0
This was between OH and MS. CA didn’t hit the buzzer hard enough. OH got it at 1.95 vs. 2.58
3. TV THEME: “Bad Boys” (Inner Circle) “Cops”
CA $2000 OH $4000 MS $0
Everybody got this in under 2 seconds. CA was fastest at 1.44
4. DANCE HITS: “Break Your Heart” (Taio Cruz Ft. Ludacris)
CA $4000 OH $4000 MS $0
Only CA got this one. Now they are tied with OH.
5. FAST TRACK – 2010s: “Bad Blood” (Taylor Swift)
CA $8000 OH $4000 MS $0
Once again, only CA had the right response, so they doubled their $$ with this song.

Going into Round 2, Kevin & Kristina (CA) have $8,000, twice as much as Rich & Mike (OH). Molly & Whitney are still on the schneid.

Round 2: That’s My Jam! Only one team went for Disco so Classic Rock it was. One team goes home at the end of the round.
First 3: $3000 each. Fast Track: $6000
1. “Slow Ride” (Foghat)
CA $8000 OH $7000 MS $0
Everyone got it. OH was the fastest team at 2.38
2. “Too Much Time On My Hands” (Styx)
CA $8000 OH $7000 MS $3000
MS got on the board at last with the only right title
3. “Listen to the Music” (The Doobie Brothers)
CA $11,000 OH $7000 MS $3000
CA for the win. 2.49 vs. 2.61 for OH. MS had the Tommy James song
4. FAST TRACK: “Surrender” (Cheap Trick)
CA $11,000 OH $13,000 MS $3,000
Team OH had the only right title and that put them in the lead!

Unfortunately, that meant the end of the road for Molly & Whitney (MS). As we head into Round 3, Rich & Mike (OH) have a $2,000 lead over Kevin & Kristina (CA).

Round 3: Corinne’s Choice: Ariana Grande.
First 3: $5000 each. Fast Track: $10,000.
1. “Problem”
CA $16,000 OH $13,000
CA had the title right; OH went with “Dangerous Woman”
2. “Breathin”
CA $21,000 OH $13,000
Both teams got it right, but it was another victory for CA, 2.23 to 2.76
3. “Into You”
CA $26,000 OH $13,000
CA scored again with the only right answer
4. FAST TRACK: “Focus”
CA $26,000 OH $23,000
Surprise! OH had the only right title, putting the kibosh on a perfect round for CA

Well! Things were looking dismal for Rich & Mike but that Fast Track win put them right back in the thick of it. Here we go with the deciding round. Kevin & Kristina have a $3,000 lead but, as Jamie likes to say, it’s anybody’s game, because the money is going UP!

Round 4: Without Words.
First 3: $10,000 each. Fast Track: $20,000. High score goes on to try to Beat Shazam.
1. “I’m Too Sexy” (Right Said Fred)
CA $36,000 OH $23,000
Both teams were right but the $$ went to CA, fastest at 1.45 vs. 1.59.
2. “Come Out and Play (Keep ‘Em Separated)” (The Offspring)
CA $36,000 OH $23,000
That $10K was just lost. Both teams had “Pretty Fly (for a White Guy)
3. “Rather Be” (Clean Bandit Ft. Jess Glynne)
CA $46,000 OH $23,000
CA nailed it with the only right title and they have locked OH out
4. FAST TRACK: “Wipe Out” (The Surfaris)
CA $46,000 MS $43,000
OH was the fastest, coming in at 1.51 to 1.68 for CA

Rich & Mike couldn’t win the round but that Fast Track song was important because it gave them a lot more to take home: $21,500 to be exact. Kevin & Kristina are about to take on Shazam and try to take home a whole lot more!

One Million Beat Shazam Round – 6 songs
First 5: $25,000 each. They only get a shot at one million dollar on the last song if they get the first 5 right. There are no multiple choice screens and they have to know the song’s exact title before Shazam to be right.
1. Rock: “Back on the Chain Gang” (The Pretenders) – Kevin hit the buzzer, hoping the title would come to him but it didn’t so the chance at the million is gone
2. Alternative: “Epic” (Faith No More) – That one ran away from Kevin, too
3. Pop: “Cool for the Summer” (Demi Lovato) – Oops! They didn’t lock in fast enough
4. Coldplay: “Paradise” – Kristina tried this one but the title wouldn’t come out in time
5. Country: “I Hope You Dance” (Lee Ann Womack) – Kristina got it and with only seconds to spare! They began the round with $46,000 and finished with $71,000.

Kevin & Kristina now get that chance to double their money by taking on the last song. If they are right, they will win $142,000. If they lose to Shazam, they will lose half of their $71,000. That means they will take home $35,500. Jamie told them the category was “R&B” and that was very tempting because, Kevin said, “R & B is my life.” Kristina had her reservations, pointing out that it could be anything and they weren’t very successful in this round. In the end, they decided to stick with the $71,000 they had in hand. They played the last song just for fun and Kevin knew “Easy” by the Commodores instantaneously.

Well, that was a bittersweet win but it was a win all the same. Congratulations to Kevin & Kristina. $71,000 is still a nice chunk of change to put toward that family vacation!
