Auburn Wins Maui Invitational Behind Great Performances by Johni Broome
Fourth ranked Auburn showed it deserves its lofty ranking by beating some pretty good competitors in the Maui Invitational Basketball Tournament in Lahaina, Hawaii. The Tigers beat #5 Iowa State, then beat #12 North Carolina, and followed that up beating unranked but undefeated Memphis 90-76 in the tournament championship game.
Auburn forward Johni Broome had a huge tournament. He scored the winning basket with one second left to beat Iowa State 83-81 in the opener. Broome also led the Tigers in scoring and rebounds, with 21 and 10. Broome topped that with a 23 point, 19 rebound performance in Auburn’s 85-72 victory over North Carolina, once again leading the team in scoring and rebounds. Broome again led the Tigers in scoring (21 points) and rebounds (16) as Auburn beat Memphis 90-76 in the championship.
Broome capped it off by winning the tournament’s Most Valuable Player Award. Both he, and Auburn bear watching this season. The Tigers will have a tough road test in their next game at #11 Duke on December 4th.
