American Men Sweep the 200 meters at World Track Championship
The ongoing World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon are going well for the U.S. team. Earlier this week, the U.S. men swept all three medals in the 100 meters, and on July 21st, they did the same thing in the 200.
Noah Lyles, who won Bronze in this event at the Tokyo Olympics and Gold in the 2019 World Championships, exploded past the field down the stretch to not only win by a big margin, he also broke legendary sprinter Michael Johnson’s U.S. record set way back at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Lyles ran a 19.31, breaking the 26 year old record of 19.32. Usain Bolt holds the world record at 19.19. Kenneth Bednarek, the Silver medalist at the Tokyo Games, took Silver in this event as well, with a time of 19.77. Erriyon Knighton completed the U.S. sweep with a time of 19.80 to take the Bronze.
