American Crime Recap: Sudden Changes, Tragedy

Shae Reese worked all week only to end up “broke” according to what he told Dustin, the kid who recruited her. Dustin said he wasn’t getting any of her money, but Shae said she did the math: 60% to Everett and 60% to whatever Slim Shady owns the building plus she has to sign up to do chores. Her pregnancy is already showing and she only has 3 customers she can even stand.

Another kid named Jeremy suggested that she borrow from Tracy, who is “killing it.” (Yes, he said that.) He said Tracy can break her off some of that action and both he and Dustin warned her to forget about going back to Billy. Her former pimp probably knew she agreed to testify against him and it might spell danger, even though she changed her mind.

Later, while all the workers were sitting around drinking and laughing, Shae took a gander at Tracy’s gallery. She got up and wandered into Tracy’s room and tried to break into her computer, giving up after three password attempts failed. She went over to Tracy’s bed and picked something up when Tracy walked in and accused her of trying to steal something. Shae told her to calm down and Tracy got up in her face. Shae pushed Tracy away hard and began walking out of the room. Tracy stabbed her in the neck with a nail file, evidently hitting an artery. Shae felt the blood behind her neck with her right hand and staggered toward the TV room but collapsed at the doorway. Dustin rushed out, pulled out the nail file and tried to stop the gusher of blood with his hands, yelling to the others to get Everett. Shae died before Everett even got there.

Everett sent everyone back to their rooms except a badly shaken Dustin. Everett told Dustin he couldn’t do anything for Shae now. He needed to know if Shae had any family. Dustin told him all she had was a pimp named Billy. Everett said this could be really bad and they could all be screwed. Dustin asked why– he didn’t do anything. Everett yelled “Are you stupid?” twice, then told him that he was still going to take care of him but there were some things Dustin was going to have to do, as in help dispose of Shae’s belongings and her body. Dustin cleaned out Shae’s room, putting everything in a Hefty bag. The last thing he picked up was the sonogram of Shae’s baby. He sat down on the bed and cried. Shae’s body was dumped in the river, just like Teo’s.
