With 3 Weeks to Go in Regular Season, Alabama and Georgia Clinch SEC Title Game Berths
Last season, Southeastern Conference powerhouses Georgia and Alabama met in the College Football Playoff championship game for the national title, with the Crimson Tide prevailing with a 26-23 overtime win over the Bulldogs. The two schools are in different divisions of the SEC, and did not meet in the regular season last year, and won’t this year. But they will meet for this season’s SEC championship on December 1st in Atlanta, as both teams clinched their division crowns on November 3rd.
Georgia (8-1, 6-1 in the SEC) beat Kentucky (7-2, 5-2) 34-17 in Lexington. The upstart Wildcats have been a surprise team this year, but the Bulldogs proved to be too much. They were especially too much in terms of rushing the football, as Georgia racked up 331 rushing yards and three touchdowns. The aptly named D’Andre Swift led the way with 156 yards on just 16 carries, with two touchdowns. Georgia clinches the SEC East title with the victory, and has three games remaining in the regular season, but only next week’s game against Auburn (6-3, 3-3) is a conference game. The others are against Massachusetts and the traditional close out the regular season opponent Georgia Tech. All three games are at home.
In Baton Rouge, Louisiana State hosted Alabama, with the winner either clinching the SEC West or being in the driver’s seat to win it. LSU entered the contest at 7-1, 4-1 in the SEC, while top ranked Alabama was 8-0, 5-0. It was a much anticipated game, but it ended up being all Alabama as the Crimson Tide rolled to a 29-0 victory, winning the West.
Alabama hosts Mississippi State (6-3, 2-3) on November 10th, followed by one of those why is it even scheduled games versus FCS opponent The Citadel, before closing it out at home against Auburn (6-3, 3-3).
