A Jeopardy Match: Two 2013 Teachers Tournament Players Plan to Marry

Canadian teacher Maryanne Lewell participated in the 2013 Teachers Tournament in November of 2013, winning her quarter-final game on November 14, 2013 and participating in a semi-final on November 20th. She didn’t win her semi-final game, but she gained something from the experience that has to be pretty rare: a fiancé!

Mike Townes, from South Carolina, was a contestant in the Friday quarter-final on November 15th. The couple met during the course of the tournament and hit it off so well, that not quite 2 years later, they are planning a 2017 wedding.

Townes told CBC News, New Brunswick that the pair clicked: “We both happen to be kind of nerds, and into the same kind of thing, and with a weird sense of humor, and obviously both smart enough to get on Jeopardy.” Lewell joked that her being cute certainly helped matters along.

The lovebirds plan to invite Jeopardy host Alex Trebek and hope that he will attend.
