A Big Saturday of Upsets in College Basketball

There were a lot of upsets in college basketball on February 5th, which will shake up the polls a bit, but it also made for an exciting weekend for hoops fans.

In the Big 12, #10 Kansas hammered #8 Baylor 83-59, in Lawrence, Kansas. The Jayhawks led 39-21 at the half, and led by 34 at one point in the game. The defending NCAA champs started the season 15-0 but are just 4-4 over their last eight games. Elsewhere in the Big 12, #23 Texas beat #20 Iowa State 63-41. The Cyclones scored just 18 points in the second half.

In the Big East, #21 Xavier fell to DePaul 69-65 in Cincinnati. The Blue Demons almost beat the Musketeers in Chicago earlier this season, before finally losing that one 68-67. In the SEC, Vanderbilt beat #25 LSU 75-66 in Nashville. It was LSU’s sixth loss in seven games, so maybe its time they dropped out of the Top 25. In the Big 10, Rutgers pounded #13 Michigan State 84-63 in Piscataway, New Jersey. The Scarlet Knights shot almost 62% from the floor, and outscored the Spartans 44-25 in the second half.

Finally, the most exciting upset of the day was in the Pac-12. Arizona State, just 6-13 on the year, hosted #3 UCLA. The Sun Devils led for much of regulation, but the Bruins tied it up at 62-62 and the game went into overtime. Then in went into a second overtime, and then a third before ASU pulled out an 87-84 victory. UCLA lost at #7 Arizona in Tucson on February 3rd, and is probably happy to be finished playing in the Grand Canyon State this season.
