Patrick Kane Scores 400th Career Goal in Blackhawks Win Over Red Wings
The Chicago Blackhawks scored five times in the third period on the way to a 7-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings at the United Center February 28th. One of those goals was the 400th of Patrick Kane’s career. He is the fourth Blackhawk to score 400 goals with the team, joining Bobby Hull (604), Stan Mikita (541), and Steve Larmer (406).
Kane also had two assists in the victory. He’s scored 11 goals and has 23 assists (34 points) in 23 games, and was tied for second among the NHL leaders in points scored at the conclusion of February’s games. Chicago improved to 12-7-4 (28 points) in the Covid revamped NHL Central, just one point behind co leaders Tampa Bay and Florida, and one point ahead of Carolina. All four of those teams are either 6-3-1 or 7-3 in their last ten games. The top four teams in each division will make the playoffs.
The Blackhawks have been one of the surprise teams of the early part of the season, especially since they are in a rebuilding mode and have been without Jonathan Toews, Brent Seabrook, Kirby Dach, and Alex Nylander all season. One reason for that has been the play of the goalies, which has exceeded expectations. Rookie Kevin Lankinen is 9-3-3 with a 2.55 goals against average and a .924 save percentage. Veteran backup Malcolm Subban is 3-2-1 with a 2.60 GAA and .916 save percentage. But while the team improved from 3-4-4 on February 2nd to 12-7-4 on the 28th, the month of March will be much more of a challenge. Chicago has five games with Tampa Bay, four with Florida, two with Carolina, and two with last year’s Stanley Cup runner up Dallas through April 1st.
