Kansas Hands Baylor Its First Loss of the Season
On February 2nd, second ranked Baylor handed then #6 Texas a decisive 83-69 loss to improve to 17-0 on the season. The Bears then missed five straight games due to Covid protocol before managing a 77-72 win over an awful Iowa State team that had only won two games all season. After another cancellation, the Bears were back in action against #17 Kansas in Lawrence on February 27th.
Baylor had beaten the then ninth ranked Jayhawks 77-69 back on January 18th. Kansas has had its ups and downs this season but entered the game at a still respectable 17-8 overall and 11-6 in conference play. The Jayhawks hadn’t had a Covid cancellation or postponement since before that first Baylor game, and was in midseason form, holding the Bears’ top ten in the nation offense to just 6 for 26 from three point range and 58 points, winning 71-58. The loss leaves Gonzaga as the last undefeated Division I school.
Baylor still leads the Big 12 by a game and a half over second place West Virginia. The Bears will be at the 10th ranked Mountaineers on March 2nd, another difficult game to try to get back to midseason form.
