TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
WHAT IS “VIVA LAS VEGAS”?
The 1964 musical “Viva Las Vegas” starred Elvis Presley and Ann-Margret. It is considered one of Presley’s best films, supposedly due to their “chemistry.” The song of the same name was written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman. They also wrote the Elvis hits “Little Sister” and “(Marie’s the Name) His Latest Flame”, and many other big hits for other artists. Anthony Curtis on Las Vegas Advisor says he does not remember Wikipedia’s claim that the City of Las Vegas tried to license “Viva Las Vegas” as an official song.
As for the translation, “Viva” is of course “long live.” According to Kelsi Nelson, Las Vegas got its name from “a scout by the name of Rafael Rivera [who] named the valley ‘Las Vegas,’ which translates roughly into “The Meadows,” to acknowledge the wild grasses which grew in the nutrient rich desert soil with ample supply of water.”
Julia wrote down “Viva las planes”. She bet and lost it all.
Jim got it right. He bet $3,601 and finished with $12,001.
Tanay got it, too. He didn’t bet anything. With his $26,800, he was already the new Jeopardy! champ.
A triple stumper from each round:
BEEFY “T”S ($800) Chateaubriand traditionally uses a large steak from this area beneath the ribs
OVER THE HILL ($1600) Go from Westminster to Whitechapel on the London underground & you’ll pass through a station named for this infamous hill
2 years ago: NONE of the players got this FJ in “19th Century Notables”
When he died in Samoa in 1894 his obituary said, “He loved Samoa better than any other place, except Scotland show

I thought Ken did a great job. His tone and cadence was very Alex-like, to me, and he made the first episode without Alex feel less strange than it might have with, oh, say Katie Couric. Please, powers-that-be at JEOPARDY!, forget the guest-host idea, and make Ken the official host .
Ken was much to fast in his reading of the clues. The pace overall was too fast. I wish he had a deeper voice.
Ken Jennings was not impressive as a Jeopardy Host. He was very full and unassuming.
Sharpen up Ken’s voice. It’s a bit too ‘soft’ sounding, needs to be punched up a little. Ken did a great job. Once the crew gets their part down, he’s a home run.
I just watched Ken’s intro thanks to JWD who posted the link.
Seems to me Ken was trying to hold back tears. Very moving!
I thought that Ken Jennings was superb, and should remain as the new host of the Jeopardy game.
I was proud of Ken Jennings and I hope he is next host. So great!!! 😆 😃
pu LEEZE! It was no accident that one of the ‘answers’ this night was ‘All About Eve’ Ken Jennings is an unctuous jerk.
I think in his intro he was trying to hold back tears so I think he is great for the show.
Why an “unctuous jerk”?? He’s never done anything to deserve that. Someone sounds a trifle jealous..
Yes Ken is so good. I hope Aaron Rodgers does not become host.
I just finished watching this episode just now in EST. How is it you had this posted with all the results before the final jeopardy round was even over?
@Kevin, it is because people have different time zones.
Kevin, where I live, believe or not, Jeopardy! comes on at 11:30 in the morning
Oh mine is not on until 7:30 at night
Thought Ken did a good job and owned it by the end. Maybe it’s nitpicking, but I was surprised they accepted “The Lady and the Tramp.” “Lady” was the dog’s name, so the correct title is “Lady and the Tramp.”
@hugh, they generally do not penalize the players for putting in or omitting an article like “the” at the start of a title.
If a player was to put the wrong article inside the title (e.g., Lady and a Tramp), it’s a different story
You are correct. I noticed the same thing over the years.
The exception to the rule is that, when adding or subtracting a leading article, the answer you give may not be the name of another popular work (of art, literature, film, etc.)
The typical example is Ralph Ellison’s “Invisible Man” vs. “The Invisible Man”. If you added ‘The’ to the former title or removed ‘The’ from the latter title, you would be ruled incorrect.
“Not the Old Yeller!!??” 🙂
Or The Lady Gaga. Alright I’m done.
Ken is perfect. No need to slide in others. Intelligent with sense of humor and quick with quips. Great smile and tv presence.
Ken is one of the smartest men I know on tv. I believe he is the best man in replacing Alex (.may he rest in peace) next person in line would have been Brook Burns. She is a very smart woman. Thank you for keeping Jeopardy and Alex alive
Well, while I’m hoping Ken doesn’t become the permanent host, I have to give him his due and say that was a perfect start.
He was particularly good in the chat with the contestants which is harder than it looks.
I think Ken will definitely do great.guest hosting for jeopardy. It’s too bad that tanay never saw Awakenings. That was a great film. Still congrats to our new champion as he could definitely get a streak running with his playing style. Speaking of viva las vegas, that theme song was used in Father of the Pride on abc. Do you remember it, VJ?
Funny that they just had a Hit Songs of the 1960s category last Friday. I remember I was grumbling to myself about them leaving Elvis out of their song selections — that was January 8th, the 86th anniversary of Presley’s birth.
Here’s a funny old clue from 2003: MISHEARD LYRICS ($1000) From a 1964 Elvis movie: “People Love Bagels”
Today is the first of Ken Jennings as guest host. What was the intro like VJ?
It seemed a little long, Kevin, but it really wasn’t. Ken basically said that Alex was pretty much the perfect host and that no one can ever replace Alex but we can honor him by playing the game he loved. Jeopardy! will probably put it up on Twitter and YouTube later.
Can u please post the youtube link here when they put it up, VJ?
Thanks
Btw, just to let u know, im loving the Masterminds recaps as well.
yes, I will, klm. Happy to hear you like the Master Minds recaps. 😃
