WHAT IS “VIVA LAS VEGAS”?

The 1964 musical “Viva Las Vegas” starred Elvis Presley and Ann-Margret. It is considered one of Presley’s best films, supposedly due to their “chemistry.” The song of the same name was written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman. They also wrote the Elvis hits “Little Sister” and “(Marie’s the Name) His Latest Flame”, and many other big hits for other artists. Anthony Curtis on Las Vegas Advisor says he does not remember Wikipedia’s claim that the City of Las Vegas tried to license “Viva Las Vegas” as an official song.

As for the translation, “Viva” is of course “long live.” According to Kelsi Nelson, Las Vegas got its name from “a scout by the name of Rafael Rivera [who] named the valley ‘Las Vegas,’ which translates roughly into “The Meadows,” to acknowledge the wild grasses which grew in the nutrient rich desert soil with ample supply of water.”
