Chiefs Make Dramatic Fourth Quarter Comeback to Win Super Bowl LIV

For more than three quarters of Super Bowl LIV on February 2nd, the NFL’s best pass defense was able to hold Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes in check. Mahomes was 18 for 29 passing, with two interceptions and no touchdowns, and the San Francisco 49ers had a 20-10 lead. Then, about halfway through the fourth quarter, Mahomes started shredding the 49ers defense with completions for big gains. He completed eight of his final 12 passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns to give the Chiefs a 24-20 lead. Damien Williams scored his second touchdown of the quarter, this time on a 38 yard run with a minute and 12 seconds left to ice it for a 31-20 victory for Kansas City.

Mahomes went from having a bad performance to being the Super Bowl MVP in the space of half a quarter of football. The Chiefs overcame double digit deficits in all three of their playoff games to come back and win by double digits in each game, something that’s never happened before. It was Kansas City’s second Super Bowl victory, 50 years after its first one, a 23-7 win over the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV.

The Chiefs also were in the first Super Bowl, losing to the Green Bay Packers 35-10. In that game, Packers’ free safety Willie Wood intercepted a Len Dawson pass, returning it 50 yards to the Kansas City five yard line and setting up a touchdown on the next play. Wood, an NFL Hall of Famer, died on February 3rd at age 83.
