Today’s Final Jeopardy question (10/30/2019) in the category “World Capitals” was:

Round 1 Categories: College Towns – Sports Talk – A Historical Rhetorical – “IO”-9 – Advertising – Cuba Libro
Steve found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “College Towns” under the $800 clue on the 9th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $1,400, $400 more than Sam in second place. He made it a true Daily Double and said Athens. That was WRONG.

Round 2 Categories: Animals & Their Food – Geographic Terms – Under the… – American Thinkers – Borrowed From Other Languages – Sounds Spacey
Steve found the first Daily Double in “American Thinkers” under the $800 clue on the 16th pick. He was in the lead with $7,600 now, $2,000 more than Dave in second place. He bet $4,000 and he was RIGHT.
Jonathan Edwards thought sin was restrained by God; otherwise the soul would be a furnace of” these two things. show
4 clues later, Dave got the last Daily Double in “Geographic Terms” under the $1,200 clue. In second place with $7,600, he had $6,800 less than Steve’s lead. He bet $2,600 and he was RIGHT.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
Wellington, NZ got its name in 1840 in recognition of the aid Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, gave to the New Zealand Company the previous year when its members came to North Island to found a settlement. “The Iron Duke” was also famous for defeating Napoleon (“that stern soul the world could not subdue”) at the 1815 Battle of Waterloo. Wellington replaced Auckland as New Zealand’s capital in 1865, mainly due to geographic convenience.
Before the FJ reveal, Alex said: “The city had a choice: they could have selected Nelson, but they didn’t. They passed on him.” Only for a year, however– another settlement was named for Horatio Nelson, the victor at the 1805 Battle of Trafalgar that cost him his life.
Sam got it right. He bet $4,000 and finished with $10,200.
Dave thought it was Georgetown (Guyana’s capital named for George III). Dave lost $15,797 and had $3 left.
Steve got it right, too. He bet $14,801 and won the game with $31,601. His 3-day total is $85,603. “Good for you,” Steve!
During the chat, Steve said that he and his wife celebrate the “Triple Crown” if Alex says “good for you” to all 3 contestants after their chats. Alex had already said “good for you” to Dave twice and “good for you” to Sam. Of course, he said it to Steve so that was a Triple Crown +1.

Steve seems to be a pretty good contender for next year’s toc. That 85K definitely does lead to a qualification. I thought that daily double in college towns was challenging as well. I think Steve has expanded his knowledge. What was the clue that asked for Kevin Spacey in the Sounds Spacey category VJ?
That category was about outer space, Lou. Kevin Spacey is too controversial to get a clue.
($400) In a 1931 cartoon this Disney dog said, “Kiss me!” but has been a canine of very, very few words since
($800) In addition to 3 Musketeers bars, this corporation also owns brands like Uncle Ben’s & Whiskas
($1200) A song by Train begins, “Now that she’s back in the atmosphere, with drops of” this “in her hair”
($1600) Part of the name of a Canadian province, it’s a type of lox
The $2000 clue is on the triple stumper list.
I thought that was a pretty difficult Daily Double clue in College Towns. Using “Ulysses” instead of “Odysseus” sent me down a James Joyce rabbit hole.
If we were celebrating clues with 25+ words, today’s flamingo clue that Jimmy read would be worth a double (that had a 52 word count!)
