Final Jeopardy: U.S. Currency (9-20-19)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (9/20/2019) in the category “U.S. Currency” was:

In 1929 Alexander Hamilton became the new face of the $10 bill, replacing this foe of his legacy, who got moved to another denomination

15x champ Jason Zuffranieri, a math teacher from Albuquerque, NM, has now won $418,343. In Game 16, his opponents are: John Lance, a ghostwriter from Tustin, CA; and Heather Sullivan, an attorney from Peekskill, NY.

Round 2 Categories: The Book Nook – That Used to Happen? – Musical Monuments – Women Scientists – “On” or “Off” – State of Chiefs

Jason found the first Daily Double in “Book Nook” under the $2,000 clue on the 3rd pick. He was in the lead with $10,400 now, $5,600 more than Heather in second place. He bet $4,000 and guessed “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”. That was WRONG.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right and, once again, they all had the same wrong response!

WHO IS ANDREW JACKSON?

The “legacy” of Alexander Hamilton, referred to in the clue, was The Second Bank of the United States, successor to the First. Andrew Jackson shut down the Second Bank in 1833. Interestingly, one of his supporters in this endeavor was Alexander Hamilton’s third son, James A. Hamilton.

Before 1929, who was on what U.S. currency note bounced around quite a bit. Hamilton had been on different series of $2, $5 bill and $20 bills before moving to the $10 bill released in 1929. Jackson had been on $5, $10 and $10,000 bills before landing on the $20 released in 1929. Jackson is due to be replaced by Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill in 2028.

John’s “Thomas Jefferson” response was first to be revealed (letting the other players know they blew it, too). John lost $401, leaving him with $5,599.

Heather lost $2,850 with that same response. She finished with $6,350.

Jason lost $52 (26 of the denomination that Jefferson’s face is on). He won the game with the remaining $18,753. His 16-day total is $437,096. With that, Jason is now No. 3, behind Ken Jennings and James Holzhauer, for highest winnings in regular season play.

This has nothing to do with Jason. I, and many friends always wonder why the audience claps when someone finds a daily double. Anyone can find it so why the applause?

    • VJ says:

I dunno for sure, Sandi, but I assume it’s because finding the Daily Double is potentially very lucky. The player has the chance to make a big bet if he or she has the $$

  2. Anne says:

Jason seems like the most humble winner in a long time. I hope he wins at least 5 more games too.

  3. William Weyser says:

I’m still waiting for the 1st Triple Solve of Season 36, and I’m still waiting for the ”It Had To Happen” day to happen to Jason Zuffranieri.

  4. JP says:

Thomas Jefferson never crossed my mind because I was aware of Hamilton’s and Jackson’s differences. But I guess that’s a fairly obscure part of American history, and if you didn’t know that, Jefferson is a great guess.

  5. Lou says:

Well another triple stumper in final today and Jason lucked out. My only guess was Aaron Burr and yet Jackson didn’t come to my mind. I thought this was a simple get for the players. Also VJ, were you also thinking of Burr? He did duel Hamilton or were there other choices for the ten dollar bill?

So now Jason is ahead of Julia but still will he get to James?

    • VJ says:

No, Lou, I knew who it was. You’re forgetting that Burr was demonized for killing Hamilton in that duel. Here’s a little rhyme about it (intended to brand Burr a coward, I imagine):

Oh Burr, oh Burr, what has thou done,
Thou has shooted dead great Hamilton!
You hid behind a bunch of thistle,
And shooted him dead with a great hoss pistol!

  6. Dal Higbee says:

Someone put a curse because that’s the reason why we haven’t seen a triple solve yet.

    • William Weyser says:

You do know that we would have had our 1st Triple Solve of Season 36, if only Jeff Harbin read the clue correctly.

  7. Richard Corliss says:

How far will he go until someone beats him?

    • VJ says:

Well, only the people who were in his last game or saw it live know that (and let’s hope some creep doesn’t leak it online). I hope he wins at least 5 more games!
