Beat Shazam Recap: August 12, 2019

Here’s a recap of the August 12th, 2019 episode of Beat Shazam, featuring host Jamie Foxx and his deejay daughter, Corinne Marie. This week, Jamie said to be great at this game you have to know all types of music: “from Justin Timberlake to Billy Ocean, from Queen to Prince.”

Here are the 3 teams:

  • Amie & Amanda, fun-loving sisters from Seattle in the Evergreen State (WA)
  • Bryson & Blake, friends who consider themselves brothers from Guntown in the Magnolia State (MS)
  • Monica & Jen, a music-spinning married couple from Portsmouth in the Granite State (NH)

If you have not seen this episode and still plan to, STOP READING. The correct responses and scores after each song are in this recap.

Round 1 – Shazam Shuffle
First 4 are worth $2000 each. The last one (Fast Track) is worth $4000.
1. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN: “Born to Run”
WA $2000 MS $0 NH $0
WA and MS got it right. WA got it at 1.54. NH had “Thunder Road”
2. CLUB HITS: “Wild Ones” (Flo Rida Ft. Sia)
WA $2000 MS $2000 NH $0
Everyone was right this time but MS won it at 1.66
3. CANADIANS: “Black Velvet” (Alannah Myles)
WA $4000 MS $2000 NH $0
Once again, everyone got it. WA was the only team under 2 seconds
4. ’60s: “Soul Man” (Sam & Dave)
WA $4000 MS $2000 NH $2000
NH got on the board with the only correct title. Color us surprised. We thought it was so well-known that it was a good candidate for the Without Words category
5. FAST TRACK – BREAKUP SONGS: “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” (Kelly Clarkson)
WA $4000 MS $2000 NH $6000
WA and NH got it right. NH took the money at 2.10. MS went with Clarkson’s first hit.

Monica and Jen (NH) took the lead with that Fast Track win. But everyone has some money in the bank. The bad part is one team won’t get to keep the money at the end of the next round. šŸ™

Round 2: That’s My Jam! Two votes went to DANCE JAMS so Cover Songs was out.
First 3: $3000 each. Fast Track: $6000. Team with the least $$ goes home.
1. “Y.M.C.A.” (The Village People)
WA $7000 MS $2000 NH $6000
“Everybody knows that song,” Corinne said. MS and NH both got it 1.29, but WA won the money at 1.17
2. “The Humpty Dance” (Digital Underground)
WA $7000 MS $2000 NH $9000
NH nailed this one at 1.14 to beat MS (1.50). WA thought it was “Vogue”
3. “Monster Mash” (Bobby “Boris” Pickett and the Crypt-Kickers)
WA $10,000 MS $2,000 NH $9000
WA took this at 1.69 to NH’s 2.22. MS had “This is Halloween”
4. FAST TRACK: “Cupid Shuffle” (Cupid)
WA $16,000 MS $2000 NH $9000
WA took the double money song at 1.16 to NH’s 1.48

Unfortunately for Bryson & Blake (MS), they were locked out on the 3rd song so it was time for them to say goodbye. Amie & Amanda (WA) have a $7,000 lead over Monica & Jen (NH) going into Round 3.

Round 3: Corinneā€™s Choice this week is: 2010s
First 3: $5000 each. Fast Track: $10,000.
1. “Your Love is My Drug” (Kesha)
WA $21,000 NH $9000
WA got this one “by a landslide” at 1.70 to NH at 3.22
2. “Want to Want Me” (Jason Derulo)
WA $21,000 NH $14,000
NH narrowed the gap with the only right title. WA had “In My Head”
3. “Centuries” (Fall Out Boy)
WA $21,000 NH $19,000
NH got the only right title again. WA had “Remember Me”
4. FAST TRACK: “Summer” (Calvin Harris)
WA $31,000 NH $19,000
Both teams got it but WA was a bit faster at 2.21 to NH’s 2.40

Stacey & Katie (NH) were doing a good job of catching up there, but that Fast Track win put Amie & Amanda (WA) way up in front again with a $12,000 lead. Let’s see how the teams make out in the next round where $50,000 is up for grabs but there are no lyrics to help you out!

Round 4: Without Words
First 3: $10,000 each. Fast Track: $20,000. High score goes on to try to Beat Shazam.
1. “Build Me Up Buttercup” (The Foundations)
WA $41,000 NH $19,000
Both teams knew this one right away. WA won it at 1.53 to 1.66 for NH
2. “Heart of Glass” (Blondie)
WA $41,000 NH $29,000
Both teams were on it again but this time, NH took it at 1.73 to WA’s 1.91.
3. “Glad You Came” (The Wanted)
WA $41,000 NH $39,000
NH scooped up another win at 1.61 to WA’s 2.70 on this one. Whoo! Now look at those scores. We don’t remember the last time the scores were this close at this point
4. FAST TRACK: “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone” (The Temptations)
WA $61,000 NH $39,000
WA won it with the correct title. NH had “Starsky & Hutch”

Monica & Jen (NH) are taking home a very respectable $19,500, one of the better second place payouts this season. Amie & Amanda (WA) have earned the right to take on Shazam in the last round for a shot at one million dollars.

One Million Beat Shazam Round – 6 songs
First 5: $25,000 each. They only get a shot at one million dollar on the last song if they get the first 5 right. There are no multiple choice screens and they have to know the song’s exact title before Shazam to be right.
1. OLDIES: “Wooly Bully” (Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs) – Surprisingly, the ladies had no idea of this classic ’60s song’s title from the “Matty told Hatty” line
2. GIRL GROUPS: “Spice Up Your Life” (Spice Girls) They made up for that by knowing this one almost instantaneously $86,000
3. POWER BALLADS: “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” (Poison) – They ran out of time before Amanda could come up with the title.
4. JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE: “My Love” – Another easy $25K for them $111,000
5. ’70s: “Dream Weaver” (Gary Wright) – “We don’t got it” was not the title. They began the round with $61,000 and finished with $111,000.

Amie and Amanda can’t play for the million but they can take on one more song and double their money. If they play this last song and they are right, they will win $222,000. “However,” if they are wrong, they will lose half their money and will take home $55,500. Jamie gave them the name of the last category — POP — to help them make this momentous decision. They conceded that Pop is a big category and it made them nervous but they would never get this chance again. “Pop is what we do,” Amanda said, and she decided to go for it. Upon hearing the lyric “no more gas in the rig,” Amanda buzzed right in to give the correct title on Rihanna’s 2008 hit song “Disturbia.”

Congrats to Amie & Amanda on having the guts to take on that last category, and congrats on getting it right. Now they can both kiss their student loans goodbye. That’s fantastic!
