The Etymology Dictionary traces the first use of “meltdown” as originally being used by 1922 as “an act or the process of melting metal.” By 1956, it was being used with “nuclear” to refer to the accidental melting of the core of a nuclear reactor. They have 1979 as the year the word began to be used to mean a breakdown in self-control. Here’s a tweet from Merriam Webster that says it was used in the ice cream industry before the “nuclear” and “loss of control” associations.
From CNBC: 11 Nuclear Meltdowns and Disasters
Avi bet $11,399, bringing him up to $25,599.
Hannah bet $2,000 for an $18,200 finish.
Shriya bet $5,400 and finished with $23,000. So the semi-final spot went to Avi but Hannah and Shriya both got Wild Cards, so we will be seeing all of them next week.

Grape Nut, of course, I thought of you when your favorite body of water/3 syllable word came up again tonight!
Yes, indeed-ee, ye petit lapin! It brought back some very fond & fun mem-or-ies!
For me, too, Grape!
While Hannah talked about donating hair to help make wigs for cancer patients, note that this tournament was taped two or three months before Alex’s cancer diagnosis

It’s true. It doesn’t happen this often. It happened in the Season 8 Tournament of Champions if the dollar figures were doubled. It also happened when Ben Noe had $17,400 from the Teen Tournament Summer Games in July 2007 Season Finale, and the Fall 2010 College Championship when Olivia Colangelo didn’t make it, making her be the alternate having only $15,000.
Congrats to everyone on a splendid finish and to all the players who made it to the semi finals. We shall now see how well these guys can do next week for the 100K grand prize. Meltdown reminded me of that movie starring Kelvin Wong and Jet Li. It also is a reminder of the Chernobyl disaster many years ago VJ. Not really sure if you do remember the movie though?
