ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “THE ART OF WAR”?

In Sun Tzu’s “The Art of War”, “Tactical Dispositions” is Chapter 4 and “Weak Points & Strong” is Chapter 6. I put links to videos of those chapters in the titles. They are from the Eudaimonia Classical Knowledge YouTube channel and include animated historical examples of the lessons. All the other chapters are on there, and a lot more.

A Daily Double in LITERARY BEFORE & AFTER from 2009: Sun Tzu meets Tolstoy on the battlefield in this classic strategy meets storytelling merger

Alan bet it all and brought Team Colby up to $8,000. He was all smiles during the think music and Trebek gave him this advice: “Never go to Las Vegas and play poker!”

David bet $13,200, bringing Team Brad up to $36,000.

Monica bet $7,500 so Team Ken finished with $32,500.

Tomorrow, these scores will be added to the final scores in the last game and we will have a winner.

    Wouldn’t that be wild if something VERY weird happens tomorrow and team Colby spoils it. Hehe.

    • JP says:

      I think that would require:

      1. Team Colby hits at least 2/3 daily doubles with significant amounts of money, betting big (and answering correctly) and goes into FJ with at least $25,000.

      2. Teams Ken and Brad go into FJ with similar amounts of money (the actual amounts do not matter if they are close to each other (see #4)))

      3. Team Colby gets FJ correct, and Teams Brad and Ken incorrect

      4. Teams Brad and Ken wager big for FJ (which would be the case if #2 is correct)

      I’d say probabilities are approximately:

      #1: 10%
      #2: 30%
      #3: 10%
      #4: 100% (given #2 occurs)

      Assuming those events are approximately independent (and the numbers I mostly pulled out of … thin air .. are approximately correct), I’d give Team Colby a .1*.3*.1*1 = .3% chance of winning.

      Stranger things have happened …

      • Cece says:

        I think you nailed, JP! 🙂

      • John B./I. says:

        @JP
        Yes, stranger things have happened. but taking into consideration that Team Colby clinched the WC with 0/6 FJ I would say: NO WAY,JOSE!
        If Team Colby wins, I eat my hat! That BOTH, Ken’s AND brad’s teams crash is zero.

  2. Albert says:

    Larissa and Matt Jackson are as good as Ken and Brad. Larissa and Matt are extremely underrated.

  3. Richard Corliss says:

    I think both teams will win. Team Ken and Team Brad.

    • John Christian Ambion says:

      There could be only one, and tomorrow will be the last day, sadly of this great all-star game. As Austin Rogers said to those who don’t like it, “you losers!”

  4. VJ says:

    Well, Larissa certainly held her own against Matt, and she was very cool, calm and collected about it, I might add.

    It was very cute how happy Alan was about getting FJ today.

  5. John Christian Ambion says:

    Not the case for today in Day 1 of the Finals, as all three came up right. However, I have a feeling that Brad Rutter will continue his domination, but I hope Ken Jennings could dethrone him, or Colby Burnett do the impossible.

    • John B./I. says:

      @JCA
      As you said: impossible and he won’t. Teams Ken @Brad are too strong. Too bad that only one can win, they are pretty much even. Barring a major mistake it will be a VERY close affair between Ken/Brad.

  6. Lou says:

    Well I am glad everyone got final right. I would love to see Ken and Brad fight it out for the million dollar prize. Furthermore after last week’s disastrous final jeopardy results, I hope this week will be easier. By the way VJ and John how long ago did you guys learn about the art of war?

    • John B./I. says:

      A loooong time ago. I did not know this was so famous here. WWII however followed still pretty much the principles.
      Team Colby is dead last as I expected, it will Team Ken v Brad to fight it out and the end result will be close unless there is an unexpected glitch in FJ or a DD.
      I am rooting for Team Ken, since this was my prediction: 1. Team Ken, 2. Team Brad 3. (distant third) WC team, in this case Team Colby.The way it looks it will be Team Ken or Brad. No question in my mind.

  7. JP says:

    Looks like they all had the correct FJ response written down in under 10 seconds.

    I’d love to see Ken go up against Matt and/or Brad.

    • John B./I. says:

      @JP
      Ken can’t go up against Matt….they are on the same team.
      You probably meant Ken vs Brad or Matt vs.Brad?

      • JP says:

        I know it can’t happen this tournament – I was thinking of some future tournament, individual or team, I’d like to see if Matt could hold his own against Ken and Brad. Same goes for Alex. Roger already had his chance in the BotD, and if the daily doubles had gone his way, he could have won big.

        • VJ says:

          So in a way, JP, are you saying you’d like to see Ken and Brad play in tournaments until a third person defeats them both?

        • John B./I. says:

          @JP
          You would have to cover ALL categories possible to get a true comparison. There are areas where even the best player is lost or makes a mistake. It will never be possible to say exactly who is the best. The good thing is that all of them have a wide range of knowledge, but to know everything is just not possible. The same could happen if somebody gets a clue in a category where he is not so strong but by coincidence knows the answer anyway. It would be interesting though, but a determination who is the best is just not realistic imo.

        • JP says:

          I’m just saying I’d like to watch a match between the aforementioned people. No more, no less. Don’t care who wins. Even an exhibition match.

          I think that this tournament has been an enormous success for Jeopardy. I just hope they don’t start to do these super-tournaments too often. Every 5-10 years seems good.

          If they wait too long though, Brad may have to get an actual job!

        • JP says:

          @John I never said the match would who determine was best. I just think it would be entertaining.

          You are correct that it would be impossible to determine whose “best” in the Jeopardy format. The winner is the person who gets lucky on the buzzer at the right time, hits the daily doubles, and who gets lucky with the daily doubles questions.
