Ambrose Bierce was a Civil War veteran and popular author of Civil War short stories such as “Chickamauga.” He also wrote “The Devil’s Dictionary.” His sardonic outlook earned him the nickname “Bitter Bierce.” Stephen Crane, born some 6 years after the Civil War, became internationally famous with his second novel, “The Red Badge of Courage,” which has been called “a stirring portrait of courage under fire.” Given Bierce’s reputation and taken out of context, the quote in the clue sounds like a “wet behind the ears” criticism but it was actually high praise: “This young man has the power to feel. He knows nothing of war, yet he is drenched in blood. Most beginners who deal with this subject spatter themselves with ink.”

Jill is a very strong player. I have noticed that CPAs never last very long on Jeopardy, but Jill may be the exception.
Close, but Jill made a substantial wager to become the new J! champion. Three times it changed hands, I hope she stopped the dreaded one-day curse tomorrow.
Well Steve was close to beating Jill but was a few dollars short. Unfortunately for surabh he couldn’t get much rhythm going today. So congratulations to Jill. Hopefully she does get a repeat win and break the one day curse. An episode of wishbone also featured the red badge of courage. By the way VJ and John what was one of your favorite lines from the novel by Stephen Crane?

Actually, I did not like it very much at all I’m sorry to say. Don’t know why.
@Lou, to be honest, I can’t recall any lines from that novel. I’m pretty sure I never saw that Audie Murphy movie either, though I seem to remember seeing him in another — probably To Hell and Back — because I remember he was playing himself in it.

Another week started and we have again a new champ.
Congratulations to Jill, nice payday. That she missed the first DD is kind of surprising, the movie alone is pretty well know (though old) and was nominated for a bunch of Oscars. But it did not matter in the end.
I was really sad when I read about Larry Martin’s passing away. My condolences again to his family and friends. A true gentleman and I am sure he influenced a lot of his young students in a positive way. May he rest in peace!
