Final Jeopardy: Contemporary Artists (1-17-19)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (1/17/2019) in the category “Contemporary Artists” was:

After it was auctioned in 2018, a work by this artist was renamed “Love is in the Bin”

New champ John Presloid, a microbiologist from Perrysville, OH, won $12,000 yesterday. In his second game, he is up against these two players: Frank Orlando, a professor from Wesley Chapel, FL; and Caroline Cawley, a research associate from San Mateo, CA.

John finished in the lead with a runaway $25,200. Frank was next with $11,800 and Caroline was in third place with $7,400.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS BANKSY?

It doesn’t get much more contemporary than this October 2018 event. “Love in the Bin” was originally called “Girl with Balloon.” The Art Newspaper relates how it was auctioned off at Sotheby’s last October 5th for £860,000 (£1.04m with fees) and immediately became “first piece to be spontaneously shredded as an auction ends,” according to Sotheby’s Alex Branczik. Right after the gavel fell, “an alarm was triggered inside the work of art. Onlookers turned just in time to see the canvas slip through its faux-gilt frame and be shredded into pieces.” There is also a follow-up article on the winning bidder still agreeing to purchase the work.

Banksy was the answer to the Final Jeopardy clue on 10/8/2015, when the results were the same as today (even the same wrong response!)

Caroline got it right. She bet $4,401, raising her score to $11,801.

Frank wrote down “Pollak.” He lost his $3,001 bet and was left with $8,799.

John got it right, too. He didn’t bet anything because he already won. His 2-day total is $37,200.

An interesting video with some interesting points that really applies to today’s response:

  2. VJ says:

Yup, I was happy to see that John had a great game today. Goes to show you can never tell. We’ve seen the reverse scenario lots of time, too, where someone has a runaway on Day One and crashes on the next.

Banksy is pretty greedy with money despite him being an artist and all that. Though I would never pay him to create stuff either since he likes to rip people off. I’m sorry but no one trusts Banksy do you agree John and VJ?

Congrats to john on his second win since I do think he might be a potential streaker. We shall see what he can do that others couldn’t do.

      @Lou
Yeah, as I said I wouldn’t spend a penny on his art, but that might be a mistake. It’s like the stock market. You may not like a company but if it gives you a profit….if one had invested just 1 K when AOL went public, he would be in clover today…..

      • John B./I. says:

And PS: Banksy does not so much rip people off, they rip themselves off. If you pay a million pounds for a shredded canvas, you don’t deserve any better. Only that you probably will make a profit, since this thing is now estimated to be worth close to 2 million…Money for money’s sake!

  4. John B./I. says:

I would rather have all my teeth yanked than spend 1 cent on anything this Banksy guy creates. Gets to show you 2 things:
    1. EVERYTHING is in the eye of the beholder and
    2. It’s all about money.
For many he is the incarnation of modern art, for others a rogue, villain, felon, con artist.

Well. CONGRATULATIONS to John for his second win !!!!! and
@ John Christian Ambion,, As I said in yesterday’s recap: you NEVER know what’s happening next, for all we know John could have a runaway game tomorrow… it wasn’t 40K but he sure had a runaway today and wiped the floor (10K alone in DDs!). MAYBE John will be our first 5 game winner in a long time??? Can HE break the jinx? TBD…

    • John Christian Ambion says:

@John B./I. You never know what will happen next, John is making a move here.

      • William Weyser says:

As far as we know, John played a much better game today than yesterday. I hope he can keep it up.
