5x champ Alan Dunn, a software development manager from Johns Creek, GA, is up to $120,802 now. In Game 6, these two fellows are his opponents: Erik Agard, a puzzlemaker from Gaithersburg, MD; and Herschel Purvis, a lab technician from Los Angeles, CA.

Erik found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “State Lines” under the $800 clue, with just 3 clues left after it. He was in the lead with $6,600, $3,400 more than Alan in second place. He bet $200, then corrected it to $2,000. He thought it was Oklahoma but that was WRONG.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS SUMO WRESTLING?

The Science of Sumo Wrestling explains why a low center of gravity is so important in sumo. “For a sumo wrestler that’s really low down on their body, especially when they crouch down with their thighs and bottoms and huge tummies almost touching the floor. By taking this type of stance they have made their moment of inertia … as large as they possibly can.” Then the wrestling moves like the ones mentioned in the clue are employed to try to topple one’s opponent.

Herschel bet $350 and finished with $9,950.

Alan bet it all, doubling his score to $25,200.

Erk bet $10,601 so he won the game with $25,201. Erik Agard is the new Jeopardy! champ.

    What was the pun that made everyone laugh whenever the “urchin care” category was mentioned? I didn’t get it at all. Can anyone please explain?
    Thanks

    @Albert
    French IS pronounced that way. It’s one of the most melodic and beautiful languages in the world. Of course one would have to speak it to appreciate it and not call it pompous….
    I am just so happy that you are not condescending and arrogant but the role model of a congenial, polite person.
    I guess you want only English words in the show? Guess what: The world – the majority of the world – is NOT American. You want to eliminate all categories that deal with foreign history, geography, languages, medicine (half of the expressions used in medicine are either Greek or Latin, 2 “dead” languages). Just do away with all those categories, call it “America has brains and beauty” and set the age limit for players at 30, plus they have to look good to increase the ratings. This is the last time I am going to dignify your – imo- prejudicial remarks with a reply. Maybe you should watch MTV or whatever and avoid Jeopardy altogether. If you don’t like it, why watch it?

      Well-stated, John. I second whatever you’ve written here. Jeopardy is NOT a beauty contest. And there is a world beyond American borders.

        @klm
        Thank you! I appreciate your support. Glad that there are still people- like you- who have a head on their shoulders that is for more than just wearing a head!!!
        Take care and aloha!

  3. John B./I. says:

    Congratulations to Erik. So the leader won, despite missing the DD (apparently forgetting the nickname for PA). Also kudos to VJ and JJ. I rather put them in now, since the weekend is there….I might forget in Monday’s Spoile Talk (CotD). The “Js” struck again!!!
    Re: the triple stumper about the lisfranc fracture: for those who follow football (soccer): Wayne Rooney, former Man. U. and player for the English national team, now playing for D.C. United, suffered 2. 2004 in his right foot (they thought his career was over, but he recovered) and 2007 in his left foot.
    He scored 253 goals for Man.U. in all competitions, broke the record for most Man.U. goals scored (held before by Sir Bobby Charlton) and is England’s top goal scorer with 53 goals in 119(!) appearances., only surpassed by keeper Peter Shilton with 125 caps.

    I have a nagging feeling that Erik will win 5 games,then another player will win 5 shortly thereafter until the remaining four 3 game winners will be eliminated. Even Alex Schmidt and Kyle (Becker) with 4 wins each might have to worry if they hold the ToC in November 2019 and skip it this year altogether. Or they play it in spring 2019 as “delayed” tournament when only 5 or 5+ winners are left. No official announcement yet, rather fishy imo.
    HAVE A GREAT AND SAFE WEEKEND EVERYBODY!!!

  4. Lou says:

    First congrats to all three players getting final jeopardy. I loved the story from Erik about getting a pie in his face. Since Alan is a crossword puzzle fanatic, Erik should send a few to Alan the next time they meet if he could string together four maybe five wins. Don’t you agree John and VJ? Who is your favorite sumo wrestler if you guys have one? Alan had a great run and he now joins gilbert Collins and Rachel lindgren on the toc tracker.

    • John B./I. says:

      @Lou
      I already posted that we will probably see a row of 5 game winners in the near future to eliminate the 3 game winners from the ToC list.
      As far as Sumo is concerned, I HATE it. It’s disgusting, though popular in HI because of our Japanese/Hawaiian community.
      Take care and aloha from still very warm( 88-90) Lahaina. Nights are getting better though, just around 72-74……!! Have a good one!!

  5. VJ says:

    So now they are accepting just the first name for the Dickens orphan who wanted more? More inconsistency and unfairness. It didn’t affect the outcome of this game, imo. Still I couldn’t help but think of that messed up twin DD earlier this month, where they wouldn’t give the player the money in spite of it being their mistake.

    • Lou says:

      Yeah I have to agree with you about the messed up daily doubles, but still you know what made me happy? No leader curses for the first or second week of October since Kyle Jones first appeared back on the 17th of September and dominated the game. Let’s hope Erik can get a week of wins going for the third week of October before the teen tournament starts. It’s rare for this month with streakers because in the last few years we had two twelve time winners from September into early October. And then two months later two more players won big.

    • rhonda says:

      It was also surprising that the DD about the Prince and the Pauper included the word prince in the clue, although it isn’t the first time they’ve done that lately.

      • VJ says:

        @Rhonda, yeah, it seems strange that they redid their whole website and are planning this big All Stars game and everything but are not paying much attention to the clues and their own rules

    • Albert says:

      I have a feeling that the show wanted an older, boring guy like Alan out of there and replaced with a young, hip, cool guy. I think that may have been a reason why Trebek was so quick to accept just the first name as the answer.

      Alan being a 20-game winner will not increase ratings, but young, cool guys like Buzzy, Austin, and Ken Jennings increase ratings and justify Trebek’s $10M yearly salary. Just my opinion.

      • John B./I. says:

        I would not exactly call Alan boring and old. He is maybe middle-aged, but certainly knows a lot more than a 20 year old “cool” guy who would not even find St. Petersburg on a map. Maybe the one in FL, but does the “cool, young” guy even know there is a St.Petersburg in Russia? I am rather bored when you have one triple stumper after another. J is not a beauty pageant. And if you are so against “old “guys, then why not replace Trebek? He is over 78….
        Your post is insulting to Alan. Just my opinion.

        • Albert says:

          Trebek can easily be replaced and the show will be the better for it. I watch the show despite Trebek. I think Trebek can be arrogant and condescending, especially when the show puts in all those French words and phrases and Trebek does that pompous French accent/pronunciation.

      • VJ says:

        @Albert, I wasn’t really expecting Alan to win this one, but he put in a very good showing and I don’t think that clue I mentioned made any difference. If Trebek had prompted Erik, I’m sure he knew Twist. It was just the disparity between other scenarios I have seen that annoyed me .

        Also, yesterday, that A.P. clue on Pinochet that was mentioned in the comments. There have been instances of people getting dinged for not knowing the first name before.

        Getting old does not mean you lose your coolness, imo. I’m old but I’m still cool and I’m older than Alan. (I don’t know if I’m cooler than he is)

        I know Trebek is not everyone’s cup of tea. He can be very witty imo but my son can’t stand him. lol. However, I don’t agree that he can be easily replaced. It will be a big adjustment. In the meantime, being able to make $10 million a year for working a few days a week is beyond cool.
