Today’s Final Jeopardy question (5/29/2018) in the category “British Commonwealth Countries” was:

Of the 16 Commonwealth nations with Queen Elizabeth II as head of state, this one is farthest from the United Kingdom

2x champ Virginia Cummings, a geriatrician from Massachusetts, has now won $51,200. In Game 3, her challengers are: Jeffrey Schwarz, a private investor from New York; and Tim Young, a filmmaker from California

Round 1 Categories: England, Scotland or Wales – TV Narrators – Retorts – The Food Chain – “I” 4 – Detail

Jeffrey found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Food Chain” under the $600 clue, with 3 clues to go after it. He was in the lead with $4,200, $200 more than Tim in second place. He bet $1,200 and took a guess with an elk. That was WRONG.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS NEW ZEALAND?

If you look on the map on Political Geography Now’s feature “Queen Elizabeth’s 16 Countries,” you can easily see that the Commonwealth realms farthest from the UK are all in the geographic region designated Oceania: Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Tuvalu. New Zealand is the farthest south.

Wikipedia has an article on the “Extreme points of the Commonwealth of Nations.” It says when you only include integral parts of Commonwealth members, “the most southern point is Jacquemart Island, New Zealand, at 52°37″10′S.”

Tim bet $8,200. That brought him up to $19,000.

Virginia bet it all to finish with $24,800.

Jeffrey bet $11,300 so he won the game with $25,000 and he is the new Jeopardy! champ.

I watch this game every night.

  2. Lou says:

Well at least we got a triple solve. Congrats to all the players. Let’s hope Jeffrey can build up his win and hopefully get another streak.

Well, that was a tough break for Virginia at the end of Round 2 when time ran out and her last chance to get in the lead was lost (the $2K clue in Award-Winning Books). Jeffrey got the lead on the $1,600 clue (Sections in this 1999 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel are “Mrs. Woolf”, “Mrs. Brown” & “Mrs. Dalloway”) and then the buzzer went off!

I loved that retort category and I found it hilarious. But she played brilliantly. At this point I think Jeffery is pretty good with vast knowledge so I think he could have a shot at the toc but it all depends on his skills.

Was it the daily doubles that did Virginia in today?

      • VJ says:

@Lou, well, yeah, she had a great lead when she got that DD and betting 4 big ones and losing it sure did make a difference in the outcome. But that’s the risk she wanted to take.
