NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS ALEXANDER PUSHKIN?

Considered Russia’s greatest poet by many, Alexander Pushkin also wrote plays (“Boris Godunov”, “Mozart and Salieri”) and stories (“Eugene Onegin”, “The Queen of Spades.”) His wife Natalya was such a beauty, it was said Tsar Nicholas I conferred a title on Pushkin just so she could attend society balls. In 1836, Pushkin began receiving letters hinting that his wife was intimate with the Tsar. Pushkin believed Georges-Charles d’Anthès and his adoptive father, Baron Heeckeren, were behind this mischief. D’Anthès was so infatuated with Natalya, it was said he married her sister just so he could be around her. This situation led to a duel between the brothers-in-law that ended Pushkin’s life at age 37. Natalya’s sister, Ekaterina, remained D’Anthès’ wife until she died during the birth of their 4th child in 1843. Natalya entered into her second marriage with Major-General Petr Petrovich Lanskoy that same year.

Andrew wrote down Tolstoy (then a lad of 8). He bet and lost it all.

Hermine had Dostoevsky (he was 15). She lost her $8,201 bet, finishing with $6,399.

Josh had Tolstoy, too. That cost him $7,206 but he won the match with the remaining $14,789. His 5-day total is $117,319.

Final Jeopardy (5/22/2018) Josh Hill, Hermine Vermeij, Andrew Lai

Reversal: ART & ARTISTS: ($800) Whistler gave musical titles to his paintings; twilight & night scenes were called this, from the French for “night” – they wanted “nocturne,” which Josh got after Hermine’s “nuit” was dinged. Before FJ!, the judges decided the clue was shaky so they gave her $800 back but not $800 for a correct answer.

A triple stumper from each round:

NAMING MY BABY GIRL FOR GRANDPA ($1000) If his name is this, French for “reborn”, just add an extra “E” at the end

QUESTIONABLE TELEVISION ($1200) On NBC & then TLC, a genealogy show has asked celebrities this title question

$5 is the minimum bet on a Daily Double and has been for 54 years

  2. Richard Corliss says:

Why would Josh risk the $5?

    • John B. says:

      @Richard
I guess because he had a lead of almost 10 K and didn’t feel too confident to make it a runaway?? Players have bet just 1 buck in the past….

  3. Louis says:

Well Josh made some gutsy moves despite not getting final. I was going to predict a three way triple solve today but still I thought he was going to bet small to maintain his lead even if he never heard of pushkin. Either way, congrats to Josh on his fifth game victory. But was one of the brother in law ever convicted of killing pushkin in that ill fated duel for natalya’s love ,VJ? Also Josh now joins the list of the previous five time winners Gilbert Collins and Rachel lindgren. I hope he wins game 6 tomorrow and get close to Rob Worman’s winnings.

    • VJ says:

@Lou, no, he wasn’t convicted of murder. He was kicked out of Russia after the duel and lived longer than Natalya and her sister. Just think, what a loss to the world that was. Pushkin might have lived another 25 years at least.

  4. John B. says:

Well, well, well… I guess being European helped. If you ask a European about famous Russian writers, you get D. and T. right away. When you ask “How about P?” you get “O yeah, him too”.

CONGRATS to Josh, we finally have another 5 time winner and he might go even higher.

    • John B. says:

Btw, smart bet by Josh on the last DD…and then he got it anyway!!! But as often is the case at J, you think a category or DD is difficult or easy, and then the exact opposite is the case……
