Final Jeopardy: U.S. Presidents (1-8-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (1/8/2018) in the category “U.S. Presidents” was:

He became an ex-President while flying over a point 13 miles southwest of Jefferson City, Missouri.

New champ Brandon Brooks won $10,801 last Friday. In his second game, he is up against these two players: Dave Daniel, from Shelley, ID; and Jamie Rosler, from Brooklyn, NY.

Round 1 Categories: Not Close Enough for Jazz – Let There Be Lighting! – Handy Advice – Words Made Up of Roman Numerals – The Spanish Inquisition – 2.0

Jamie got the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Spanish Inquisition” under the $600 clue, with 2 clues to go after it. She was in third place with $1,200, $4,600 behind Dave’s lead. She bet $600 and tried “at the stake.” That was WRONG.

Jamie found the last Daily Double in “Coat of Arms” under the $1,200 clue. Only one clue remained after it. In second place with $8,000 now, she had $1,800 less than Dave’s lead. She bet $2,000 and guessed zebra. That was WRONG.

Dave finished in the lead with $9,800. Brandon was next with $8,600 and Jamie was in third place with $6,000.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS RICHARD M. NIXON?

After Nixon resigned the presidency, he left the White House and was flown to California. When Ralph Albertazzie, the Air Force One pilot operating the flight, died on August 15, 2011, The L.A. Times included these details in his obituary: “Summoned to fly Nixon home to Orange County after the president resigned on Aug. 9, 1974, Albertazzie made sure to calculate the geographic point the plane was flying over — 13 miles southwest of Jefferson City, Mo. — when incoming President Gerald Ford finished taking the oath.” Mr. Albertazzi wrote more about this historic trip, as well as his other experiences, in his book “The Flying White House” (1979).

Jamie got it right. She bet $4,001, bringing her up to $10,001.

Brandon got it, too. He bet $8,000, to finish with $16,600.

Dave picked Truman. He lost his $7,799 bet, leaving him with $2,001. That ended the long string of one-day champs and gave Brandon a 2-day total of $27,401.

Anyone know how the clue leads to the answer being Nixon? Didn’t know the answer but can’t see how the clue leads to the answer being Nixon

    • VJ says:

@James, basically, just the plane in the clue eliminates many presidents, but more than that, the outgoing President is generally still in D.C. when his successor is inaugurated, and he and other living presidents are generally present. Dave saw Missouri and immediately thought Truman but perhaps if he paused a second or so to wonder why Truman would not be there when Ike and Nixon were sworn in as Pres. and VP, he would have said bingo to Nixon, who left office in disgrace.

Here is a link from wikipedia about who usually attends the inauguration, and it gives the exceptions of outgoing presidents who did not attend the inauguration of their successors.

Also, just for something extra, this section of the Air Force One article notes that FDR was the first President to fly in a plane while in office.

    • Kurt says:

It is customary for the outgoing president to attend the inauguration ceremony of the newly elected president. An obvious exception to this would be when the president has died while in office. The only other exception I know of is Richard Nixon, who resigned the office.

Have any other living presidents been absent for the inauguration of their successor?

      • VJ says:

@Kurt, In the first article I linked to below, it says the exceptions are: John Adams, John Quincy Adams and Andrew Johnson didn’t attend Jefferson’s, Jackson’s or Grant’s, respectively. Woodrow Wilson rode to the Capitol with Warren G. Harding but didn’t hang around. (Nixon is also included, of course).

Dave’s “responsible raccoons” chat story was great! It’s so funny that I saw a Funko Pop Bob Ross with Raccoon collectible figure today when looking for some toys to buy the twins for their bday. I’d love to send it to Alex as a memento of his chats with Dave and Henry.

Didn’t nixon quote himself that he was not a crook, VJ? Plus, have you ever used Windows 2.0 previously or have you switched to other operating systems for computers now? I’m guessing that the people who were supportive of nixon has accused him of being a crook but what crime did he committ?
