Rockies’ Nolan Arenado Has a Big Day at the Plate

Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado is used to having big games at the plate. After all, the 26 year old slugger is coming off of back to back seasons of 40+ homers and 130+ RBIs. But in the Rockies’ 18-4 clobbering of the San Diego Padres on July 19th in Denver, Arenado outdid himself. He had five hits total, a career high, three of which were home runs, also a career high. He scored four runs and had seven RBIs.

Arenado is hitting .309 with 21 homers and 80 RBIs (tops in the National League) and an OPS of .940. His July numbers are off the charts; he has 22 hits in 55 at bats for a .400 batting average, with six homers, 19 RBIs, a .782 slugging percentage, and an OPS of 1.196. He also helped propel the Rockies into second place in the National League West with Colorado’s win over San Diego coupled with the Arizona’s 4-3 loss to Cincinnati. The Rockies are 11 games behind the red hot Los Angeles Dodgers, but their 56-41 record is good for the top Wild Card berth. The Rockies travel to Pittsburgh to take on the resurgent Pirates in a weekend series starting July 21st.
