Napoleon III (Louis-Napoleon) was the son of Napoleon I’s brother Louis Bonaparte, who was the King of Holland from 1806 to 1810. Napoleon III’s mother was Hortense de Beauharnais, daughter of Napoleon I’s first wife, Josephine. His name at birth was actually Louis-Napoleon, but when he declared himself Emperor of France, he chose to go by Napoleon III. He couldn’t go by Napoleon II. That was Napoleon’s son with his second wife, Marie-Louise.
