Flames Stay Hot, Put Penguins on Ice

The red hot Calgary Flames, winners of nine straight, hosted the Pittsburgh Penguins on March 13th. Pittsburgh came into the game one point behind the cooling down Washington Capitals; the Penguins would take over the lead in the Metropolitan Division with a win as the Capitals were idle. The Flames would move into a tie for second with Anaheim with a win; the Ducks were also idle.

A game between two contenders playing well shouldn’t disappoint, and this one didn’t. Pittsburgh had a 2-1 lead after the first period. The Flames took the lead in the third on a power play goal by Johnny Gaudreau in the third, but Sidney Crosby tied it up at 3-3 with his 35th goal of the season at the 16:29 mark. It came down to a shootout after a scoreless overtime, with Kris Versteeg scoring the game winning goal for the team’s tenth straight win.

The victory tied the Flame’s franchise record for consecutive victories. They’ll face Boston in Calgary on the 15th. The Bruins have won seven of 10, so getting that new record 11th straight win won’t be easy.
