Final Jeopardy: Classic Film Roles (1-4-17)
The Final Jeopardy question (1/4/2017) in the category “Classic Film Roles” was:
A letter to the director that said, “Dear Sir, I am fat & wear spectacles” got a young actor a role in this 1963 film.
New champ Amanda Berofsky won $5,999 yesterday. In her second game, the challengers are: Megan Soto, from San Diego, CA; and Rich Betz, from Honesdale, PA.
Round 1 Categories: Historic Objects – Germany’s Next Top Model – TV Themes – Dumb Down the Saying – Don “E” – Marie
Amanda found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Historic Objects” under the $600 clue. There was one clue left after it but, hey, we were lucky to see the DD. She was in second place with $4,200, $1,200 less than Megan’s lead. She bet $2,500 and knew what it was but blanked on the name so she was WRONG.
More than 70 scenes are depicted on it with the last, chronologically, showing the English retreating at Hastings in 1066. show
Megan finished in the lead with $5,400. Rich was second with $3,000 and Amanda was last with $1,700.
Round 2 Categories: Interviews – Words from the Greek – Top 40 Before & After – 19th Century Novel Characters – Early Humanoids – “V”acation Spots
Amanda found the first Daily Double in “19th Century Novel Characters” under the $2,000 clue, with only 9 clues to go after it. There was a reversal that affected Megan (details below). Amanda was in the lead with $11,700, $2,700 more than Megan in second place (after the $800 adj.). She bet $1,700 and thought it was “A Tale of Two Cities.” That was WRONG.
Marius Pontmercy, Gavroche. show
We only got to see 5 of those remaining 9 clues and, sadly, the last Daily Double was under one of the “Early Humanoid” clues.
Amanda finished in the lead with $14,000. Megan was next with $9,000 and Rich was in third place with $1,000.
NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
WHAT IS “LORD OF THE FLIES”?
In this “Time Flies” documentary video, the boys who played the main characters in “Lord of the Flies” (1963) reunited as grown men. Hugh Edwards (Piggy) did not mention how he got the role. At about the 29.00 mark, he talked about his own perception of Piggy and how he later had to describe Piggy’s role on an English literature exam. “I’m sure my answer was significantly different from everybody else’s,” he said, “but it did pass…”
The letter tidbit in the clue is on IMDB’s “Lord of the Flies” trivia page, as well as on Hugh Edward’s IMDB bio page.
Rich wrote down “Hey Benny!” He lost his $800 bet and had $200 left.
Megan didn’t have a response. She lost a grand and had $8,000 left.
Amanda guessed “West Side Story.” That cost her $4,001. She won the match with the $9,999 she had left. That’s a $4K better payday than yesterday. Her 2x total is $15,998.
Reversal: This was the $400 TOP 40 BEFORE & AFTER clue: “Britney Spears’ debut single pleads with a Cyndi Lauper No. 1 to “hit” it over & over.” Megan’s response of “Hit Me One More Time After Time” was reversed for leaving out the word “Baby.” Funny, though, the name of Britney’s song is really “…Baby One More Time”
A triple stumper from each round:
MARIE ($1000) The act of folding shows your gratitude to the shirt according to this author of “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.” A correctly folded shirt will stand on it side.
INTERVIEWS ($1,600) Defending his onetime Oprah-heralded bestseller on Oprah’s show, he said, “I have… admitted to… lying”
2 years ago: TWO of the players got this FJ in “Historical Nicknames”
In the Red Star in 1976, Capt. Yuri Gavrilov coined this nickname for a U.K. politician who had made a speech against the USSR. show

44/56 here. Jboard is picking on the writers for pegging Maybe I’m Amazed by McCartney as a song from 1977(in the top 40 before and After category alongside Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe). 1970 is when it came out from the first McCartney solo album, but the Wings live version from 1977 is the one that hit the Hot 100 and peaked at #10.
If Megan had gotten it right, she would have won by $1.
Lord of the flies will always be in our hearts forever but i m not surprised no one got it. Also where did hey benny come from, vj?
To me, it looked like he was just sending a shout out to a friend there.
Alex got to do his first Dracula impression of the year off that $1200 19th Century Novel Characters clue. I had the closed captions on because there was a LOT of noise outside. It claimed he was imitating Boris Karloff!

Trebek did a Dracula impression on the 1975 High Rollers episode that Million Colors of Light posted to Youtube a few months ago. So he’s been doing that impression for more than four decades.
I did say “of the year.” I always notice when Trebek does Dracula because I’m a big Bela Lugosi fan. heh. I’ve even got a Bela Lugosi and Alex Trebek post with a video of the 12/8/2014 FJ on here where Trebek says both Frankenstein and Dracula in Bela’s voice.
