Final Jeopardy: State Capitals (12-8-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (12/8/2015) in the category “State Capitals” was:

It’s the only capital named for a signer of the Constitution.

New champ Liz Fritz won $16,401 yesterday. In her second game, she is up against these two players: Trevor Moore, from New York, NY; and Alex Maggio, originally from Cincinnati, OH.

Round 1: Alex found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Countries’ National Anthems” under the $800 clue on the 4th pick of the round. Each player had answered one of the previous clues, so he was in the lead with $600, $200 more than Liz in second place. (Trevor got the $200 clue). Alex bet $500 and guessed Brazil. That was WRONG.

WHAT IS MADISON (WI)?

Madison and Jefferson City are the only two state capitals named after Presidents who were founding fathers. Thomas Jefferson signed the Declaration of Independence but did not sign the Constitution. James Madison signed the Constitution but did not sign the Declaration of Independence. See Wikipedia’s list of signatories to key historical documents for the Founding Fathers.

Trevor wrote down Jefferson City. He bet and lost it all.

Liz came up with Harrisburg (named after John Harris, Sr.). She also bet it all and wound up with zero.

Alex started out with Jefferson… but he crossed it out and got the right answer in. He bet $4,000 so that made his winning total $15,100, and we’ll be seeing this new champ tomorrow.

FJ Results: 12-8-15

Waiting to Exhale: Before showing the players’ responses, Alex Trebek said that he stressed the Constitution when reading the clue for a reason and Alex Maggio gave a visible sigh of relief. When his answer was revealed and announced correct, he let out an audible sigh.

I got that “Sister Carrie” clue. There was a 1950s movie based on the novel with Laurence Olivier, Jennifer Jones and Miriam Hopkins. It’s just called “Carrie” and Miriam Hopkins was a real witch in it!

48/60. Recent two time champion Jennifer Morrow went to Brandeis, and will probably get a kick out of the clue about it, Celebrity Alma Maters was the category and Debra Messing of Will and Grace went there (Jewish university named for Supreme Court justice Louis Brandeis)
