Final Jeopardy: The Founding Fathers (10-27-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (10/27/2015) in the category “The Founding Fathers” was:

On an alphabetical list of Declaration of Independence signers, he comes between Lyman Hall & Benjamin Harrison

2x champ Sean Anderson has won $48,300 so far. In his third game, he is up against these two players: Jayne Lady, from Iowa City, IA; and Dave Treptow, from Milwaukee, WI.

Round 1: Sean found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “‘P’s on Earth” under the $1,000 clue. He was in the lead with $8,600, $6,400 more than Dave in second place. He bet $1,400 and he was RIGHT.

Sean finished in the lead with $10,800. Dave was second with $6,200 and Jayne was in the hole at minus $600. After the break she got right out of the hole and was in the plus column with $600. This was one of two reversals for Jayne today. You will find them at the bottom of the recap.

Round 2: Dave found the first Daily Double in “Masterpiece” under the $1,200 clue. He was in second place with $16,200, only $1,000 less than Sean’s lead. He bet $4,200 and thought it was Anna Karenina. That was WRONG.

Sean found the last Daily Double in “Downtown Cabbie” under the $1,600 clue. In the lead with $19,200, he was now $8,800 ahead of Dave in second place. Alex said it was his chance to “put it away,” but Sean has been very wary since his $4,400 DD fail yesterday. He bet $1,000 and, wouldn’t you know, it was in his hometown so he was RIGHT.

Sean finished in the lead with $21,000. Dave was next with $11,600 and Jayne was in third place with $10,200.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS JOHN HANCOCK?

Most lists of the signers go by the state they were representing, as in the above video. U.S. Constitution.net has an alphabetical list by last name, with additional information on each individual.

Land of the Brave.info has an alphabetical list by first name at the bottom of this page. Hancock comes between John Adams and John Hart on that one.

Jayne thought it was Alexander Hamilton. She bet the farm and wound up with zero.

Dave got it right. He bet $11,598. That brought him up to $23,198.

Sean also got it right. His $2,300 bet gave him today’s winning total: $23,300. His 3-day total is $71,600. “Hey,” Alex Trebek said, “he wants to be in that Tournament of Champions.”

FJ Results: 10-27-15

Jayne’s Two Reversals:
1st Round: 2 Consonants, One Vowel, $600 “A mongrel dog.” (Jayne: mutt; Dave: cur)
2nd Round: Downtown Cabbie $400 “Take you from your loft in Soho to a gallery across Houston in this “Village”? Tell ya the truth, it’d be faster to walk. (Jane: West Village; Sean: Greenwich Village)

    should have wagered it all

seemed to want to win it all.

I had an eerie experience with today’s FJ which scared me a little — but I scare easily.

I was unimpressed with Jayne’s performance during the show. Of course, I rolled my eyes when she forgot about the P in quotation marks and came up with “What is Yalta?” More rolling occurred when she forgot “Two Consonants and a Vowel” and came up with “What is mutt?” — and she is very lucky they reversed their decision, because you KNOW she had once again forgotten the category, which strongly implied three-letter words.

Now we get to FJ and I begin thinking of last names beginning with “Ham” and instantly think of Alexander Hamilton and just as instantly reject it because I knew he wasn’t a part of the congress that signed the Dec. of Ind.

Which brings me to “Han,” and the instant recognition that we have one of the easiest FJ’s of all-time, because the answer is the most famous signer, the man whose name is synonymous with “signature.”

And here’s where the eerie part comes in. I KNEW Jayne would say Alexander Hamilton. I can’t describe this accurately. I felt it and knew it as surely as I knew my own name.

Even so, when it was revealed, it gave me butterflies. Am I psychic?

No. I think what it is is that 51 years of watching Jeopardy has given me an insight into the behavior of contestants. She proved, by forgetting categories, that she’s not one to think things through, but go with her first impulse. She got to “Ham,” thought of “Hamilton,” and that was it.

Well, maybe that’s the explanation, because I really don’t think it was a psychic experience, as eerie as it made me feel. Why would I suddenly become psychic over something so unimportant? But it sure felt that way.

@Cece — don’t forget to check the 2 years ago FJ. LOL. AND there was a related clue in today’s game. When will it go away??? :):)

    • Cece says:

I just read it and chuckled. Are you guys taunting me? I really got annoyed when they accepted the wrong name last week, but I’ve gotten over it. Can we all let it go?? LOL!

  4. aaaa says:

Sean should probably have wagered enough to get a lock game on the second DD, which came up after ALex said the less than a minute warning. But he got FJ! right so he didn’t cost himself the game anyway. 46/59 here.

    • VJ says:

Sean is just totally gunshy of the big FJ wager since yesterday when he had that big lead and lost it, and Tom was hot on his heels for a minute.

That kind of makes it hard for him to compete in the TOC should he really get in it, imo, or in other words, he won’t have a snowball’s chance in hell. 🙂

  5. Berob says:

Three contestants from the Midwest – how often do we see that!! ???

  6. jacob ska says:

@vj, remember I told you it’s difficult to predict what contestants might come up with in fj? This is a classic example today. Alexander Hamilton wasn’t even a prominent political figure when the Declaration of Independence was signed.

Whoa boy. That response left me speechless. Bet you didn’t see that coming.

  7. Leena says:

If Sean gets 25k tomorrow he beats Michael Bilow and Elliot Yates, nearly disqualifying Elliot, but hope he and Vaughn AND John come back to him. Love to see that.
