Final Jeopardy: American Poetry (4-22-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (4/22/2015), in the category “American Poetry” was:

This 1883 poem says: “Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand a mighty woman…”

New champ Michael Brady won $15,601 in yesterday’s match. In his second game, he takes on these two players: Ashley Alley, from Alexandria, VA; and Alex Schraff, from Coral Springs, FL.

Round 1: Michael found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Truth” under the $600 clue. He was in the lead with $8,200, $6,800 more than Alex in second place. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

Michael finished in the lead with $9,400. Alex was second with $2,200 and Ashley was last, in the hole for $1,000.

Round 2: Ashley found the first Daily Double in “The Four Seasons-ish” under the $2,000 clue. She was still in third place with $1,800, $12,400 less than Michael’s lead. She bet $1,700 and she was RIGHT.

Bach dedicated 6 concertos to Christian Ludwig, Margrave of this, who never paid or thanked him. show

Michael finished in the lead with a runaway $18,000. Alex was next with $7,000 and Ashley was in third place with $3,100.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE NEW COLOSSUS?

Americans call her “Lady Liberty” or the “Statue of Liberty.” Her original name was given to her by Bartholdi who called her “La liberté éclairant le monde” (“Liberty Enlightening the World.”) She was also given a unique name by American poet Emma Lazarus (1849-1887) who calls her ‘Mother of Exiles’ in her poem called “The New Colossus”.

Ashley was going for but didn’t quite finish “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.” She lost her $3,000 bet and finished with $100.

Alex wrote down “Colossus,” which was not sufficient. He lost his $799 bet, finishing with $6,201.

Michael got it right. His winning total only rose by $1.00 because that is what he bet. His 2-day total is $33,602.

FJ Results: 4-22-15

Coincidentally, there is a poem called “Colossus” by Sylvia Plath who was the answer to a clue in this game. Also, there was a clue in today’s game asking for the predecessor of the answer to the FJ below!

2 years ago:: ALL of the players got this FJ in “TV Spinoffs”

Premiering in 1993, this show lasted 11 seasons, like its predecessor show; the 2 were set nearly 2,500 miles apart. show

    congrats vj @jacob.
low numbers again, at least we have a repeat champion who did not seem too comfortable with the category considering his bet.

Thanks John. Also, we have been having a run on contestants named Alex in a short period of time given that this is not listed as one of the top most male popular names.

I thought the Twitter clue under the OED category should have been under the Business category. Btw, surprised at the triple stumper on SOS after Brillo was ruled incorrect. What else is there once Brillo is ruled out?

      • VJ says:

LOL on the SOS!! I thought the same thing.

still have to wait an hour until the show comes on. i’ll look out for it.
as far as alex is concerned, maybe j is superstitious by thinking another alex might raise the numbers and quality of the game. looking at the #s it seemed to be another rather weak game. just 28.100 before fj and 24.302 after fj despite a runaway. 1 buck? might as well have bet nothing.

        • VJ says:

Have you seen it yet? I thought Michael looked pretty happy about his $1 bet while Alex appeared to be just dumbfounded that his answer was wrong because up til the reveal, he seemed pretty sure it was right.

Alexander has been a Top 100 name in the USA since 1977, Top 50 since ’86 and it went up just about every year until it reached No. 6 in 2010. It was No. 8 in 2013.

Last year’s name rankings will be released in May. Jeopardy will probably have a clue about popular names after that.

alexander/alexandra/sasha (gender neutral is a very popular slavic name, especially russia, ukraine, belarus, georgia etc and france from all the immigrants from those countries. whenever there is a surge in migration, you have a surge that spills to western europe and consequently to the u.s. and canada. trebek’s father moved to canada when the romanov dynasty was still ruling. his other -real – first name – george is as “georg” very popular in even non slavic countries like hungary and german speaking areas like austria, switzerland, germany, even the netherlands, belgium, france and britain in their local variety.every once in a while you have a surge where one or more particular name are “revived” so to speak.
