Final Jeopardy: Business (4-20-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (4/20/2015), in the category “Business” was:

This social media company launched in October 2010; in 2012, with about a dozen employees and no revenue, it sold for $1 billion.

6x champ Alex Jacob is now up to $149,802 in winnings. He’s back today in a bright red shirt to take on these two players: Todd Lovell, from Carmel, IN; and Monica Lott, from Rootstown, OH.

Round 1: Alex found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “From Page to Screen” in the 4th pick of the round under the $800 clue. He was in the lead with $1,200, double Todd’s second place score. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

Round 2: Alex found the first Daily Double in “Oh! B-City in Africa” under the $2,000 clue. In the lead with $12,600, he had $200 more than Monica in second place. He bet it all again and he was RIGHT again!

Alex finished in the lead with $26,400. Todd was next with $18,400 and Monica was in third place with $9,600.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS INSTAGRAM?

“The sale of Instagram to Facebook for a cool billion in the spring of 2012 was the ultimate Silicon Valley fairy tale: 18 months from launch to offer. But, for co-founder and C.E.O. Kevin Systrom, it was more of a roller-coaster ride, with several missed opportunities, at least two “aha” moments, and one major reboot. . . . The price Zuckerberg offered was $1 billion-— $300 million in cash and the rest in Facebook stock, an especially generous-seeming deal, on the eve of his company’s much-anticipated initial public offering.” (Vanity Fair: The Money Shot)

Monica wrote down Instagram, then crossed it out in favor of Twitter. That cost her $5,000 and she wound up with $4,600.

Todd got it right. He bet $8,001 and finished with $26,401.

Alex wrote down Twitter, too. He lost his $10,401 bet so he ended up with $15,999. And that made Todd the new Jeopardy! champ.

FJ Results: 4-20-15

I do not recall a game where every DD was a true DD wager, much less all successfully.

  2. yeahyman says:

many a twitter accounts , at least that i have seen, have “joined on” dates in 2008 and 2009

  3. Annie says:

Did anyone else notice Todd answered with “desalinization” (sic) when the answer is desalination? His response is not a word. How did they not catch this?

  4. Leena says:

I THOUGHT Twitter 2! I’m kidding. I think that was made in ’09? Who knows. I GOT IT RIGHT! Yaus (I say “Yes” that way, a’right)!

One has to love the way Alex waved good-bye. What a classy guy. Good sportsmanship.

  6. Dalton Higbee says:

Oh! That is unbelievable. I wanted Alex Jacob to be a ten or eleven time champion. But, though, we will 100% certainly see him in the next future Tournament of Champions.

Twitter’s ipo was 2013 at about $24 billion market capitalization. I can’t imagine Jack Dorsey ever wanting to sell Twitter. Nor do I recall when Twitter was last valued at $1 billion. Now it hovers around $30 billion.

So it was way undervalued in fj responses today. Tsk!

Not really surprised Alex got this wrong. Currency trading deals more with the forex and not investing in businesses per se which would not be on his radar.

Bet Monica could kick herself for crossing out “Instagram.” Glad no one wrote Facebook as John had predicted on Spoiler Talk. Eric, Elijah, and myself could not imagine anyone writing down a $200 billion market capitalization company, which is approximately the value of FB, as a response to the way this clue was worded.

As I stated the contestants would know better and they did. Nice run Alex. Congrats Todd.

Awww, So sad to see Alex go, but who were the celebrity Jeopardy! contestants?

    • VJ says:

Kevin O’Leary, Aaron Rodgers, Ginger Zee and Zachary Quinto were “revealed” today.

It’s on the Howdies post here and on the homepage of Jeopardy.com

well, too bad for alex. he missed his first fj when he needed it. at least i was close with 1, although it was not a runaway, thus only half right. i did not overestimate the players and vj wisely stayed out of the predictions.

jacob, you said 2 w/o any conditions, so i consider our tie my loss and sending you a drink of your choice (cyberial…) what will it be??:):) i almost bet you were torn between 2 and 3 and would have said 2.5 if possible?? i can only say that because you and i and others here know it does NOT mean the players are equal to the task. in addition you and i are involved in the stock market. i think some players might not even know what an ipo is if asked and out of context.

one thing is for sure: alex made the games exciting and when he found DDs, it reflected in the total scores before fj: just today 47 K before fj and 54.400 after (with only 1 right), though todd did not go all in and monica unfortunately crossed out her initial response.

        • VJ says:

Wisdom had nothing to do with me staying out of the predictions. I did it because you predicted what I would predict.

        • jacob ska says:

@John, no drink necessary. Chatting with you is my reward. Thanks though.

      • john blahuta says:

thanks vj! though only 2 of those can claim some celebrity status imo. rodgers if you are interested in american football and o’leary as a sort of second class analyst.
but zee and quinto…? puh-lease! i hope the rest will be more interesting. i guess there are not too many real celebrities eager to make a fool out of themselves..:):)
