Final Jeopardy: Literary First Lines (3-2-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (3/2/2015), in the category “Literary First Lines” was:

He wrote the 1971 opener “We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold.”

2-day champ Jose Garriga has won $38,402 so far. In his third game, he is up against these two players: Leslie Gordon, originally from Pittsburgh, PA; and Thomas Phillips, originally from Greenville, AL.

Round 1: Leslie found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Many ‘Do'” under the $1,000 clue. She had the lead with $2,400, $600 more than Jose in second place. She bet $1,500 but had no idea so she was WRONG.

Thomas found the last Daily Double in “Historical Romances” under the $1,200 clue. In the lead with $12,000, he had $5,100 more than Leslie in second place. He bet $3,000 and thought it was Edward VI. That was WRONG.

While courting, he had a standing invitation for Sunday dinner at the Wallaces’ home in Independence. show

Thomas finished in the lead with $13,000. Jose was next with $12,800 and Leslie was in third place with $9,700.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS HUNTER S. THOMPSON?

“Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is arguably the greatest chronicle of drug-soaked, addle-brained, rollicking good times ever written. The novel first appeared as a two-part series in Rolling Stone magazine in 1971, was printed as a book in 1972. Unsurprisingly, this tale of a long weekend road trip has gone down in the annals of American pop culture as one of the strangest journeys ever undertaken.” (7 Timeless Life Tips from Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas)

Leslie bet $9,499 bet and finished with $19,199.

Jose bet $10,201. That brought him up to $23,001.

Thomas bet $12,601 bet so he won the match with $25,601 and he is the new champ.

Well, hooray! We finally got the elusive triple solve. That was quite a game in any event, despite the Daily Double misses and Phileas Fogg. Alex started out talking about how and why they often don’t finish all 60 clues in both rounds but the players finished both boards today, even though they weren’t using much category shorthand.

Thomas is a graduate student. During the chat, he talked about randomly running into the Pope in Rio de Janeiro, after deciding to go to the beach because the buses were all broken down.

2 years ago:: TWO of the players got this FJ in “Classic Novels”

In this novel the title character says, “It is a bad omen” after a guard does not hear a train & is crushed. show

Does anyone know who was the lady that presented the $2000 American music clue, it was a video clue? The answer was Woody Guthrie.

Gotta say, congrats Thomas. He is was my neighbor, and his parents still live net door to mine. Wish I had known he was on it, guess I’ll just watch tomorrow. Dude is smart, I’d bet on him.

THIS topic and clue get a triple solve….

shows at least to ME the things people consider important these days…

that santo domingo is not an island but a town on an island in the caribbean (and NOT the south atlantic)…who cares.

but everybody gets some drug induced babble. but then many might put this up with works by hemingway, steinbeck etc.maybe even shakespeare.

Good game by all 3 players! Congrats to Thomas! Finally, a triple solve.

And they even had a special category for me today. :):)

    • VJ says:

Yes and they got real cute with the category titles after It Borders Brazil >> Many “Do” >> But Not Chilly.

      LOL!!

      • Cece says:

Yes, very cute. And in “it borders Brazil, in the Argentina clue “It can get really messi….”

I was so rooting for Jose, but he had a few bad guesses, got no DD, oh well.

        • Cece says:

@William, I knew you would be a happy camper tonight. :):)

@VJ, way way off doesn’t even begin to describe that answer. Where did he get Edward VI from? Unbelievable. Yes, Jose is a great player and I wanted to see him again in the TOC.

BTW, thanks for that NPR segment you posted on cotD page. We’ll see how she does on Wednesday. 🙂

        • VJ says:

@Cece – I figured the Wallaces reminded him of Wallis and he just didn’t get his Edward numbers right.

Coincidentally (or maybe not since it had nothing to do with her), Wallis Simpson’s given name was Bessie.

      • VJ says:

Jose did his best and as aaaa pointed out, it was only that last clue that put Thomas in the lead. I like how Thomas blew the Bess (Wallace) Truman thing and when Alex told him, he reacted like oh, of course…. he was way way off. Edward VI died at age 15.

Oh, well, now Jose will never forget Phileas Fogg.

        • William Weyser says:

We have a triple solve finally after 32 attempts and that does include the Teachers Tournament.

        • Cece says:

@VJ – Oh, that explains it then.

(I meant for my previous comment to land below William’s, since I was replying to you & him.)
          🙂

And Thomas pretty much won by getting the last clue in DJ! to take a $200 lead over Jose.
