Final Jeopardy: Last Words (1-20-15)
The Final Jeopardy question (1/20/2015), in the category “Last Words” was:
In 1170 he said, “I am ready to die for my Lord, that in my blood the church may obtain liberty and peace”
2x champ Nicholas Bérubé has won $19,600 so far. Today he is up against these two players: Rebeca Avila, from Arroyo Grande, CA; and Daniel Grigg, from Colorado Springs, CO.
Round 1: Rebeca found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “”A”cademy Award Nominees” under the $1,000 clue before the first break. She was in second place with $800, $1,800 less than Nicholas in the lead. She bet her whole $800, and for the second time, she forgot that the “A” was in quotations in this category. She said “Titanic” and that was WRONG.
11 nominations, 1984; it won 8 Oscars including Costume Design. show
Nicholas finished in the lead with $7,200. Daniel was second with $3,600 and Rebeca was last with $1,200.
Round 2: Rebeca found the first Daily Double in “Dead Poets” under the $800 clue. She was in third place with $2,400, $8,000 less than Nicholas’ lead. She bet $1,400 and she was RIGHT.
“So glistered the dire snake, and into fraud/ led Eve our credulous mother to the tree/ of prohibition, root of all our woe” show
The game ended with 4 clues still on the board in “Do You Have a Reservation”. Unfortunately, one of them was the second Daily Double.
Nicholas finished in the lead with $12,000. Rebeca was next with $8,600 and Daniel was in third place with $6,000.a
Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
“A sword’s crushing blow extinguished the life of Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, on a cold December evening as he struggled on the steps of his altar. The brutal event sent a tremor through Medieval Europe. Public opinion of the time and subsequent history have laid the blame for the murder at the feet of Becket’s former close personal friend, King Henry II.” Eyewitness to History: The Murder of Thomas Becket 1170
Rebeca wrote down St. Thomas but failed to specify which one. She lost her $3,500 bet and wound up with $5,100.
Daniel got it right. He bet it all and finished with $12,000.
Nicholas wrote down Thomas Aquinas (d. 1274). That cost him $5,400. He was left with $6,600 and that made Daniel the new Jeopardy! champ.
Daniel Grigg is a beer wholesaler. He talked about his youthful experience with a motor bike at 3:00 in the morning in Thailand during the chat.
2 years ago:: NONE of the players got this FJ in “Official Country Names”

Hey, so I’m actually Nicholas from the last couple episodes- I won’t just blurt anything out because I know Jeopardy is serious about “contact with previous contestants” if any of you are attempting to be a contestant. But if you have any questions, or are cool with me posting, I’m happy to do so!
Your skill with the buzzer was impressive, Nicholas. Some of the clues I’m sure everyone knows, like today, where GWTW premiered. Heck, one of the players was originally from Atlanta but Daniel managed to buzz in first.
Thanks, I did get much better with the buzzer in my 2nd game. Obviously bad luck with FJ though! 🙂
I know, must have been frustrating and it was also too bad you didn’t get any of those easy DDs like Julius Caesar, the Honey Badger, the Prince, etc :-0
It was weird that in each of your games, the same person got all the DDs (Amanda, Leah, Rebeca)
Yikes, Jacob, John and I were all writing our comments at the same exact time. There’s something about synchronicity that creeps me out.
I’ve pointed out before that forgetting the category is a sign of a lower grade Jeopardy player. I liked it when Alex told Rebecca she forgot the category TWICE. She sure did.
It’s just so strange that people are so self-confident they can go on national television to show off their knowledge, but then only demonstrate that they’re really not very good at the game.
If you ever go on, remember, when you think you’ve got the answer, there’s only ONE measly thing you have to do before responding, and that is to remind yourself of the category. It’s really a simple game. It’s not chess.
Meanwhile, Nicholas, who never successfully answered a FJ, couldn’t last long doing that, which today’s outcome proved.
Tom, I agree with you on Nick and fj. This was “it’s just a matter of time” situation. For whom the bell tolls? The bell tolls for thee. Ding!
LOL. A little John Donne. You’re holding out on me, Jacob, you know a lot of poetry.
Not really. There are just certain lines that pop into my head sometimes depending upon the situation. It’s amazing how some things we learned at a young age lie dormant in our brains and suddenly pop up depending upon events.
1/6 this week on fj. i guess nick got not back far enough with his study on british kings. a beer wholesaler got it.GOOD for him !the assassination of TB was a really big affair back then and still is in (british) history, even though it happened almost 800 years ago.somewhat like the drop of the first nuclear bomb.some things you just (should) know. that’s what i call broad knowledge. he got one of the most infamous events in overall history.good job and congrats!!
VJ, I’m sure you were glad to see the “Dead Poets” category. Nice to see Nick give his brother credit for helping him prepare for Jeopardy. Rebeca was awfully nervous. Haven’t seen a contestant that nervous in a long time. Loved her “Is that Ogden Nash?” But as Trebek pointed out it was in the form of a question.
Congrats to Daniel for nailing fj and becoming the new champ.
absolutely! kudos to daniel!
Yes, though I always hate it when they put in lines from Poe with a Raven or Lenore in the clue.
Edward Lear is one of the poets buried in Italy (LINK). With him, it’s usually about The Owl and the Pussycat, but they did have a Jumblies clue a couple of years ago.
