Final Jeopardy: 2014 Newsmakers (10-2-14)
The Final Jeopardy question (10/2/2014), in the category “2014 Newsmakers” was:
Both making news in June, these two Davids with similar last names are Lebron’s new coach and Eric Cantor’s conqueror.
New champ Josh Hager won $26,100 in yesterday’s match. Today his opponents are: Kate Horowitz, from Washington, D.C.; and Shawn Choe, from New York, NY.
Round 1: Kate found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Atlantic City” under the $800 clue. She was in third place with $1,200, $3,000 less than Shawn’s lead. She bet it all and came up with “the Gold”. That was WRONG.
It’s fitting that this Atlantic City casino comps with its 24 Karat Club. show
Shawn finished in the lead with $7,400. Josh was second with $5,800 and Kate was last with $600.
Round 2: Kate found the first Daily Double in “Atlantic Cities” under the $1,200 clue. She was third place with $3,400, $4,800 less than Shawn’s lead. She bet $3,000 and she was RIGHT.
This South African city is often called “the Mother City” because it was the first place in the nation settled by Europeans. show
Kate found the last Daily Double in “American Revolutionaries” under the $1,600 clue. She was now in second place with $7,600, $1,800 less than Shawn’s lead. She bet $200 and guessed George Washington. That was WRONG.
Unemployed when the Revolution began, he was hired to outfit the frigate Alfred. show
Shawn finished in the lead with $10,200. Josh was next with $6,600 and Kate was in third place with $6,200.
NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right. We sure would like to know how they cooked up this clue. Did the similarities of the last names just randomly jump out at a cluewriter from the Drudge report last June or what?
WHO ARE BRAT AND BLATT?
When newcomer David Brat ousted House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in the Republican primary for Virginia’s 7th Congressional District, on June 10th, the Washington Post headline read: David Brat just beat Eric Cantor. Who is he?”.
David Blatt was hired as the coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers on June 20, 2014. At the time, he was referred to as a “relative unknown to fans” (see the video).
A little trivia note: David Blatt is also the real name of lead singer Jay Black of Jay & The Americans. The 60s group had 2 clues on Jeopardy!
(2002) JAY $1200: It’s the magical group heard here
(1986) BACK-UP GROUPS $800: After first backing Jay Traynor, they backed Jay Black
Kate came up with Smith & Jones. She only bet $200 and finished with $6,000.
Josh was unable to get the McNeil and MacNeil thing he was going for, which wasn’t right anyhow. He bet and lost everything.
Shawn didn’t have a guess for either part of the clue. He lost his $3,000 bet but the $7,200 he had left won him the game.
Shawn is an attorney. During the chat, he talked about how he learned to dance right before he got married.

and yet another leader willing to play for a tie…..but this was just too tough. i actually – before i posted on CotD- had to look up who cantor is. his defeat was news for, what, 2 days???
yeah, thx, bet to tie – didn’t notice that!
The news reports I brought up show that the reporters didn’t expect bb fans to know much about Blatt, or anyone to have heard of Brat.
I think this was a really unfair FJ — the poor contestants probably crammed on a lot of stuff but, assuming this was taped a couple of months ago, instead got hit with an obscure coincidence not many would even notice that happened very close to their taping!
But PS – speaking of current news – I subscribe to the Atlantic City Press headlines and about half an hour before Jeopardy came on, they sent me a report that the Golden Nugget (the answer to the first DD) was just fined $30K and its top executive suspended for 3 days. LINK
it WAS unfair. unless you are a cleveland cavaliers fan AND a diehard republican from virginia, you can probably count the people who knew about BOTH “events” even on the day they happened on one hand. except for the aforementioned those were “who cares” news. with j sometimes you not only wonder how they come up with some of the contestants, there are strange and/or
peculiar clues aplenty as well…..
i wonder how much the clue writers get paid? because normally you get what you pay for. yesterday’s fj was phrased somewhat bumpy imo, adding the “an” and “a” would not have killed them.
Who are Blatt & Bradt?
well, in my post in CotD i predicted: zero to one solve. you really had 2 categories in fj: sports and politics.
i thought that somebody might get the bb related clue, but not even that happened.
and most probably never even know cantor, leave alone the guy who defeated him in the primaries in virginia. imho: an extremely tough fj,especially compared to 95% of other fj clues.
coaches are obviously not that popular although they deserve more credit and exposure to the media they usually get. politicians are not that popular either, but in their case rightfully so…..
