Final Jeopardy: Agatha Christie (9-29-14)
The Final Jeopardy question (9/29/2014), in the category “Agatha Christie” was:
In the 400-page book “Agatha Christie A to Z”, entries beginning with this 6-letter word start on p. 224 & end on p. 238.
Two co-champions who made quite a nice haul on Friday are back today: Catherine Hardee who now has a 4-day total of $95,201 and Alan Lange who has a 1-day total of $36,400. The challenger is Elisa Korb, from Bethelem, PA.
Round 1: Catherine found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “State Capital Nicknames” under the $800 clue before the first break. She was in the lead with $4,400, 3,200 ahead of Elisa in second place. She bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT.

Catherine finished in the lead with $9,000. Alan was second with $5,200 and Elisa was last with $3,200.
Round 2: Catherine found the first Daily Double in “Historical Haiku” under the $1,200 clue. She was in the lead with $11,800, $2,200 more than Alan and Elisa who were tied in second place. She bet $4,000 and she was RIGHT.
Post-Lenin, A pall/ from the non-peachy Georgia / Total Bolshevik. show
Catherine found the last Daily Double in “Hippo Campus” under the $2,000 clue. She now had the lead with $21,800, $8,600 more than Elisa in second place. She bet $5,000 and thought it was Botswana. That was WRONG.
Geography taught us young bulls that this country whose capital is Lusaka probably has the most hippos. show
They only got to one of the 3 clues left after that and Catherine got it, finishing in the lead with $18,800. Elisa was next with $13,200 and Alan was in third place with $10,400.
Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
“Agatha Christie A to Z: The Essential Reference to Her Life and Writings” is a comprehensive reference to the author’s life and work, featuring over 2,500 entries, including descriptions of all her books, television and film adaptations. Solving a murder was her main theme and the word “Murder” was in many of her titles, for example: “Murder on the Orient Express”, “The Murder on the Links”, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd”, “The Murder at the Vicarage”, “Murder in Mesopotamia”, etc. See the Christie Mystery site for more info.
Alan wrote down poison. That cost him $3,000 and he finished with $7,400.
Elisa got it right. She doubled her money and finished with $26,400.
Catherine wrote down “Poirot.” She lost her $7,601 bet and landed in second place with $11,199.
So Elisa Korb took down both champs though it did look like Catherine was going to win this one for most of the game! Nice going, Elisa, and not a bad payday either. We will, of course, be starting a new TOC list soon and Catherine will be on it.
Elisa is a professor and the owner of a very high maintenance and spoiled doggie who demands clothing while out shopping.

if i understand fj correctly, then there are 15 pages that are filled with words that start with murder? in other words, 15 pages full of “murder….”??or are other words on those pages too? the clue is a little ambiguous to me. maybe i just have to plug in my brain here. i don’t know if alex gave any further explanation, show airs now in a little less than 3 hours.
would have been a hoot, if catherine and alan could have pulled it off again. despite the strange clue, “murder” was also my first reaction, like vj hinted in the spoiler talk.
it also makes sense, since “m” is in the middle of the alphabet and the pages mentioned are a little past the middle. but there are probably not many entries that start with x,y or even z….so m(urder) fits perfectly. have to browse through the book when i go to the bookstore next time , to see if ALL words on tose pages mentioned start with murder or only some, has anyone this book by any chance and can enlighten me??? thanks in advance!
My “hint” is from Stephen King, John, and was actually a Jeopardy clue earlier this year on May 8th:
MOVIES BY ONE-WORD QUOTE $400: 1980: “Redrum!”
and what was the movie???? was that connected with “the shining”? i think i remember something like that, but with the “D” facing the other way?i believe it was written on a bedroom door or something and in the mirror it spelled MURDER…..i saw that movie only once and that by accident?
and as a ps: to speak with pete seeger: where have all the posters gone???
yes, “The Shining”. As to the posters, idk — maybe their computers crashed 😉
