Scarface Stars – Where Are They Now?
Say hello to our old friends… the stars of Scarface. According to Box Office Mojo, Scarface was the 16th highest grossing film in 1983. Al Pacino was already well-known in the gangster genre for his portrayal of Michael Corleone in The Godfather Trilogy. Ironically, Robert De Niro, who played the younger Vito Corleone in Godfather II, was offered the role of Tony Montana but turned it down. Well, that’s history. It went to Pacino and he has said that Tony Montana was one of his favorite roles. Let’s check in on the main cast of Scarface and see what they’re up to now.
Al Pacino played Phil Spector in a made-for-TV film last year. He also starred as King Herod in Salomé, a film based upon Oscar Wilde’s 1891 play about the infamous dance of the seven veils that results in the beheading of John the Baptist.
IMDB lists two Pacino two films in post-production, Imagine and Manglehorn, that do not as yet have release dates. Another one, Humble, is listed as “Completed”).
Steven Bauer played Manolo “Manny” Ribera, Tony Montana’s right hand man. Tony kills Manny when he finds him with his sister, only to learn too late that the two had just gotten married. At the time Scarface was filmed, Bauer was married to actress Melanie Griffith. The 6’1″ actor has been very busy since Scarface, with many film and TV roles. In 2011, he played Mexican drug lord Don Eladio on AMC’s series Breaking Bad. He is currently playing as ex-Mossad agent turned private investigator Avi in Showtime’s Ray Donovan.
Michelle Pfeiffer played Elvira Hancock, originally the mistress of Frank Lopez. Tony Montana not only wanted Lopez’ business. He wanted his woman too. And Elvira ended up with Tony for a while anyway. Michelle went on to star in many films and earn 3 Oscar nominations, none of which were for her mob gal-related roles. In 2013, she co-starred with Robert De Niro in The Family, a comedy about a mafia family in witness protection.
Before playing Tony’s sister, Gina Montana, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio had only been an extra in one film the previous year. Since Scarface, she has acted steadily. In 2013, she had a role in CBS’s Hostages. She also has a recurring role as Kelly Burkhardt on NBC’s Grimm.
Robert Loggia, who played Frank Lopez in Scarface, has been on the acting scene since the 1950s. He was well-known to kids from 1958 to 1960 as the lawman Elfego Baca in a Disney series and appeared in many 60s TV Westerns and 70s crime shows. Other highlights of his career include 1982’s A Woman Called Golda in which he played Anwar Sadat to Ingrid Berman’s Golda; Prizzi’s Honor (1985), Big (1988); and Independence Day (1996). The 84-year-old actor continues to be active and has roles in two films coming out this year.
