Alex Rodriguez Drops Lawsuits, Will Serve Suspension

Alex Rodriguez

Last Month when New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez was handed a 162 game plus the post season suspension for 2014 for his use of performance enhancing drugs in the Biogenesis case, he reacted by suing everybody.  Major League Baseball, Commissioner Bud Selig, even his own Players Union became subjects of his legal wrath.

After thinking about it for a couple of weeks, A-Rod apparently has second thoughts.  The lawsuits were quietly dropped February 7th, and Rodriguez will sit out the season on suspension. Both Major League Baseball and the Players Union issued brief statements applauding the decision to drop the lawsuits.

Clearly, this is the right move.  It was unlikely the courts would overturn a sports arbitrator’s decision as they tend to stay out of such things.  Suing his Union only served to alienate his fellow players.  The legal fees would be in the millions; he’d be out those millions plus his $25 million salary if he lost his case.

Word is that A-Rod wants to stay in baseball in some capacity after his playing days are through, and a bitter court fight would make him persona non grata in baseball circles, even more than he is now.   So, Rodriguez will now begin the long road to redemption, following in the footsteps of Ryan Braun.
