Farewell Daddy Blues Quotes: Boardwalk Empire
Here are some quotes from “Farewell Daddy Blues” (recap here), the twelfth episode and finale of Boardwalk Empire’s Season 4:
Sally Wheet: I think you’re lying to me.
Nucky Thompson: That’s a hell of a thing to say.
Sally: Prove you’re not.
Nucky: Me llamos Enoch… de los Estados Unidos… soy hombre de negocios cansado…
Sally: You’re a tired businessman?
Nucky: Is that what I said? I meant retired…
Sally: Otra almohad debajo de los tobilllos, carino. Y apurate.
Nucky: I give up.
Sally: Another pillow under my ankles, honey, and make it quick.
Nucky: I think I’ll let you do the talking down there.
Sid: Nuck
Nucky: What? . . . I’m on the phone goddammit.
Sid: I’m sorry… it’s just that…
Nucky: Let me call you back.
Chalky White: Facedown. On the floor.
Nucky: Chalky, I looked all over for you
Chalky: You find me?
Nucky: Whatever you think…
Chalky: Here it come now…
Nucky: I had nothing…
Chalky: Who sitting in my club…
Nucky: You have to understand…
Chalky: Answer the question…
Nucky: Narcisse.
Chalky: And who you cutting deals with? Say it
Nucky: Narcisse.
Chalky: So he yo n*gg*r now. That right?
Nucky: Not right
Chalky: So you his n*gg*r? I think I like that better.
Nucky: It’s not what you think. I tried to stop it. I didn’t know…
Chalky: What I don’t want to hear from you — words! Outside my house last night, family inside and I can’t even go in. Wearing another man’s clothes, standing here with my friend.
Nucky: You have to trust me.
Chalky: I don’t have to do nothing you ask — nohow — nowhere!
Nucky: Then what is it you want?
Chalky: Narcisse.
Nucky: You gotta believe me, Chalky. We want the same thing
Chalky: Oh, I know you want it now.
J. Edgar Hoover: Your regular teams plus 8 additional agents?
Knox/Tolliver: These men are dangerous
Hoover: How many are there?
Knox: Four, counting Thompson. Each with an armed guard, most likely more than one.
Hoover: You actually pulled this off…
Knox: You seem surprised, Edgar
Hoover: Organized crime… I’m merely exhibiting a healthy skepticism
Knox: Is that what it is?
Hoover: What are you implying?
Knox: That ever since the first week of law school, you’ve been rooting for me to fail.
Hoover: Marcus Garvey… they’re ruling on his appeal within the month.
Knox: Congratulation, Edgar.
Hoover: Well, we’re not popping the corks just yet. Eight additional agents. Say, Jim, I think it’s time, considering the respect the position deserves, you begin referring to me as Director Hoover.
Gillian Darmody: I was in love. I was tricked. How can that be right? I’m not allowed to speak. I’m not allowed to live. Why does a man get to do anything he wants?
Knox: All you have to do is remain calm and Nucky and none of the others will ever know you were involved.
Eli Thompson: You have a brother, Knox? Or whatever the bleep your name is.
Knox: That’s none of your business.
Eli: F*ck you. And you too, you smug son of a bitch.
Knox: I have a brother named Claude. He’s an admiralty lawyer in Washington
Eli: You ever bleep Claude over?
Knox: He’s not a criminal, Eli. And you’re doing this for your son.
Eli: I need a guarantee.
Agent Selby: there are no guaran–
Eli: I’m not talking to you.
Ralph Capone: They had to know you were here, Al.
Al Capone: That Jew prick, Hymie Weiss
George Mueller/Van Alden: Actually he’s Catholic. Wojciechowski. He changed it to Weiss.
Ralph Capone: Wo-ja what?
Al Capone: Sit down. Have a drink:
Mueller/Van Alden: I don’t drink, sir.
Al Capone: Then start.
Ralph Capone: Who do you think it was, John.
Johnny Torrio: Weiss, with Bugs Moran and the other one…
Ralph Capone: Schemer Drucci.
Al Capone: You think so?
Torrio: Sure. After that O’Banion thing, who else could it be?
Richard Harrow: Mr. Thompson, I looked for you in the Onyx Club
Nucky: Not the safest place for me these days.
Harrow: I need to ask you a favor.
Nucky: I already gave you a job, Mr. Harrow
Harrow: Jimmy Darmody. . . . I need to know where he is.
Nucky: He was cremated after overdosing in his mother’s tub.
Harrow: You and I both know that isn’t true.
Nucky: I only know what I read in the papers.
Harrow: Then you’ve read Gillian Darmody has been arrested for murder.
Nucky: But that’s ludicrous. It was James who died in that tub.
Harrow: If they believe that, she’ll go free and she’ll come back for the boy to spite me. After all of this, my wife and I could not bear that.
Nucky: If somehow an anonymous source were to disclose to the authorities the whereabouts of Jimmy’s body, what would you do for that anonymous source
Harrow: I would do whatever you asked.
Mayor Bader: Well, guess I’ll kick things off…
Nucky Thompson: Ed, get the bleep out of here
Bader: It’s my office.
Nucky: I’ll change that if it’s the last thing I do
Narcisse: You’ve seen him. … You’ve heard from him.
Nucky: He’s looking for safe passage in and out.
Narcisse: In exchange for what?
Nucky: I’m just the middleman here.
Narcisse: I thought you were friends?
Nucky: I don’t have friends I have partners. I bet on a horse to win. He didn’t even place. Today is a different day.
Narcisse: On whom will you wager tomorrow?
Nucky: Let’s get something straight, all right? Your beliefs, your tragic history, I don’t give a rat’s ass about any of it. The only thing your people and mine have in common — we both know what a dollar’s worth and if we can’t make it one way, we’ll make it another. I have a lot at stake in this town. Try to take it from me, we have a problem. The club, the Northside, I don’t care which of you coloreds run it as long as it’s run. The percentage. Your new pal the mayor. We’ll discuss those later. This just needs to be over.
Narcisse: Over how?
Nucky: That’s for you to arrange.
Narcisse: I urge you to be explicit.
Nucky: I don’t ever want to worry about that spook coming at me in the dark again. Do we understand each other?
Narcisse: We do — at long last.
Nucky: Then I’ll let Chalky know you’re willing to talk. There’s something he wanted me to tell you, said you’d be interested… That singer… he said he knows where she is.
Harrow: Tommy, make sure you count how many cows you see. I want a full report
Tommy: Okay.
Harrow: Tommy, I love you.
Paul Sagorski: C’mon sport. Let’s get some Chuckles for the road.
Harrow: I will see you in 3 days.
Julia Harrow: Or I will hunt you down and drag you to Wisconsin.
Harrow: I promise.
Nucky: I’m leaving town. Heading to Cuba with Sally
Eli: When were you gonna tell me?
Nucky: I intended to tell you now.
Eli: We have a meeting. Masseria…
Nucky: There is no meeting. I saw to that.
Eli: Nucky, I…
Nucky: Nucky what? Nucky, I made a mistake? Nucky, I’m sorry?
Eli: I’m ready. Are you?
Nucky: It’s what you deserve.
Will Thompson: Pop… he’s gonna kill you!
Eli: Nothing will fill that hole you got inside. Don’t you know that yet?
Nucky: This is your mess, Eli. Drown in it.
Agent Selby: You’ve been duped, Jim. Let’s face it.
Knox/Tolliver: You’d love that wouldn’t you?… That’d make your entire day. . . . You think I don’t know. You, Hoover and the others —- what a joke this has been. You were never on board. Never for a second. I have put everything on the line!
Selby: I think you should give me your sidearm.
Knox: What?
Selby: You are not keeping on an even keel.
Knox: You want my gun, Harold? Why don’t you take it?
Al Capone: You’ll be out of here in no time. Then we’ll get those sons of bitches.
Johnny Torrio: This is a young man’s game. I’m not gonna fight.
Al Capone: You gonna let ’em get away with it.
Torrio: It’s yours, Al. Take it . . . the whole operation.
Al Capone: Jesus, Johnny, are you sure?
Torrio: You win, kid. It’s yours. It’s Europe for me.
June Thompson: What is going on?
Eli: Where’s Will?
Knox: Eli, did you forget we had an appointment?
June Thompson: Will someone please tell me what is going on?
Eli: Now, goddammit, go upstairs.
Eli: Look my brother knows…
Knox: What did I tell you would happen, Eli?
Eli: I’m trying to explain…
Knox: Your son is going to jail. There was this boy a while back. Ellis something. About your own son’s age. A real Boy Scout type. I arrested him on a stolen vehicles charge. He got 4 years in the Federal lockup. Last I heard he was very popular with the other inmates.
Eli: I will bleeping kill you, you son of a…
Knox: Are you threatening a Federal agent? Give me your wrist. My partner Agent Selby, he thinks I’m crazy. Do you think I’m crazy, Eli? It’s okay you can say it.
Eli: I don’t know what you are.
Knox: I’ll tell you what I am. I’m a man who’s gonna…
Eli: F*cking kill you!
Narcisse: Tell me your terms.
Chalky: You get everything.
Narcisse: I already have that.
Chalky: Then why are we talking?
Narcisse: I want and you want. . . . A daughter for a daughter.
Chalky: That woman ain’t your blood.
Narcisse: How could you possibly understand?
Chalky: I understand I rock her fine. That was some fine jelly. Now her face ain’t right and I don’t need to be looking at that no more.
Narcisse: Behold the noble savage.
Chalky: That me. Bankroll in one pocket. Pistol in the other. And all the rest? I never did give a bleep. We see each other now?
Narcisse: None of you will make it past the alley.
Chalky: Then you ain’t never gonna see her again. Baby you save from that half and half choke her mama. They ever catch that man?
Narcisse: Tell me where she is.
Chalky: My girl wedding.
Narcisse: There is no wedding.
Chalky: What you know about it.
Narcisse: I know what Maybelle told me. But hear it from her yourself. A nod from me and she’s gone. I’d say that makes us even…. (slams table) Tell me! Tell me!
Harrow aims to shoot Narcisse from the balcony but Maybelle moves in front of the bullet.
Chalky: Maybelle? Baby? Baby girl?
Levi: We gotta go.
Chalky: Maybelle, Maybelle. My God, my baby girl.
Federal Agents: We’re looking for Eli Thompson.
Nucky: What is it you want, Officer?
Agent Selby: The whereabouts of your brother.
Nucky: Are you going to charge him with canceling a meeting?
Selby: No, with the murder of a Federal agent.
Hoover: You entered this country through the Port of New Orleans in 1898.
Narcisse: Who are you?
Hoover: The one asking questions.
Narcisse: 1898, yes.
Hoover: 26 years in the United States but you’re not a citizen.
Narcisse: And that is grounds for detaining me how?
Hoover: Why would you go on living in a country you do not wish to belong to.
Narcisse: The exile does not choose his Babylon.
Hoover: Your compatriot Garvey. He thinks you should all return to Africa.
Narcisse: That would be an oversimplification of his philosophy.
Hoover: What am I missing?
Narcisse: I doubt if I could make you to understand.
Hoover: You seem to be a clever fellow. Who do you think gets to decide what the truth is?
Narcisse: The truth is what those in power wish it to be.
Hoover: During the course of investigating the seditious activities of Marcus Garvey, James M. Tolliver, a special agent with the Bureau of Investigation, was murdered in Atlantic City, New Jersey by an unidentified colored male. Dr. Valentin Narcisse assisted the Bureau in apprehending the suspect. He further agreed in a private conversation with Director Hoover to provide ongoing secret intelligence regarding Mr. Garvey with particular concern to his radical agenda and his ties to foreign powers.
Narcisse: Why would he do that?
Hoover: To demonstrate his commitment to the values of his adopted land.
Narcisse: Brother Garvey is a hero, devoted to the liberation of a great people.
Hoover: But you are not. You are just a peddler and a pimp sitting in a jail cell.
Narcisse: I am businessman and a follower of Christ.
Hoover: If you agree to cooperate you can go on pretending to be anything you want. You don’t and I will make sure you never see daylight in America again.
Narcisse (mutters a bible verse from Matthew 6:34 under his breath) “Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.”
Hoover: I cannot hear you.
Narcisse: I said… yes.
Hoover: Yes what?
Narcisse: Yes… sir.
Willie: That’s everything Ma asked for.
Nucky: Tom can run it up to Brigantine later, unless you want to do it.
Willie: Uncle Nucky, can we just…
Nucky: But they’re counting on you… your mother, brothers and sisters. You’re in charge now…
Willie: I’ll drive up tonight
Nucky: That’s the right decision
Willie: What am I supposed to tell them?
Nucky: That your father is safe with friends out west. It’s best they don’t know where. It’s hard on everyone but that’s how it has to be.
Willie: Is he?
Nucky: Is he what?
Willie: Safe?
Nucky: Speak your mind, Will
Willie: If I hadn’t shown up, what you would you have done?
Nucky: He’s your father. My brother and I’m not the person you think I am. Come by the Albatross later. We’ll both head up. That way all of us can be together, all right? It gets easier, you’ll see.
