Atlanta Radio Hosts Fired for Mocking ex-Saints Player Steve Gleason

The classless trio of radio talkers on Atlanta sports radio station 790 The Zone have been fired after a tasteless on air skit mocking former New Orleans Saints safety and special teams player Steve Gleason.  Gleason, who suffers from ALS  and is severely disabled by the neuromuscular disease, took the high road and forgave the hosts, who had apologized after creating an uproar with their inexcusable action.

Gleason turned the incident into an opportunity to raise awareness of the disease and help find a cure,  a cause he has dedicated himself to through his website teamgleason.org . ALS is  also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease named after the Yankee great who died from it in 1939.  British physicist Steve Hawking also suffers from the disease.  Gleason’s time with the Saints  is best remembered by the blocked punt he made on  Atlanta Falcons’ punter Michael Koenen in a game on September 25, 2006 in the Superdome, the first game played in the building after Hurricane Katrina.  The event has been immortalized in a sculpture outside the Superdome.
