Melky Cabrera and the Fake Website Defense

San Francisco Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera, who is currently serving a 50 game suspension after a drug test showed he had an elevated testosterone level, had his alibi all figured out to beat the rap.  Accordng to the New York Daily News, an associate of Cabrera’s allegedly purchased a website for $10,000, and inserted an ad into the website to sell a nonexistent supplement product.  Cabrera was going to try to get out of the suspension by saying that he used the product and inadvertently ingested the banned substance.

Wow, what a defense.  It apparently didn’t dawn on Cabrera that Major League Baseball would check out this website and discover that it was just a front and the supplement didn’t exist.  Cabrera’s associate, Juan Nunez, has been a paid consultant for Cabrera’s agents, but the agency quickly distanced itself from him, and is not believed to have anything to do with the scheme.  Nunez himself has said he was the only one involved with the website. Federal investigators have also taken an interest in the case.

Baseball is quite clear that players are responsible for whatever goes into their bodies, so the “I didn’t know” excuse wouldn’t fly anyway.  Melky and Juan:  Real Men of Genius.
