Dallas: Truth or Consequences Recap

Dallas’ Truth and Consequences (Season 1, E. 5)  aired on July 4, 2012, after a marathon of all prior episodes to date, and opened with the continuation of Rebecca’s conversation with Christopher. Her story is that Tommy sent the email. Christopher is both horrified and dumbfounded. Her tearful confession includes the detail of John Ross’s blackmailing her ass, but it is Tommy Christopher runs off and attacks. Initially, Tommy doesn’t even seem to know what he’s being blamed for, but he’s only too willing to take the blame and back up Rebecca’s claims of innocence. He gets summarily kicked off the ranch and Christopher throws Rebecca out, lock, stock and suitcase, too. “Make sure I never see you again,” he tells his devastated bride. John Ross has been comforting Elena, who now feels bad about blaming him for the email, and she tells him how Christopher did her wrong.

To add to this major upheaval, a messenger brings Bobby the new Southfork deed, which is now in J.R.’s name alone. Before Bobby can get “his boxer’s in a knot,” J.R. gives his convoluted explanation of how he  kept Southfork out of Cliff’s hands. Now J.R. says, Southfork is back in business but Bobby says it’s not going to happen. J.R. says Bobby may want to carry on Miss Ellie’s legacy but he intends to carry on Jock’s legacy. Bobby (of course) vows to take J.R. down. Bobby’s disgusted wife, Ann, never imagined J.R. could stoop so low. J.R. tells her she needs to work on that imagination. Bobby and Christopher head off to confront Mitch Lobell, but he is gone with the wind.

Supporting cast: Callard Harris as Tommy. Kevin Paige as Bum;
Leonor Varela as fake Marta (Veronica); Mitch Pileggi as Harris Ryland

Another lawyer named Lou advises Bobby that they can’t do anything about it unless they can prove J.R. knew about the fraud fake Marta pulled off. Meantime, the Dallas police have an APB out on Miss Bipolar. At the same time, Rebecca is trying to call Christopher while Tommy tells her he has two years in this and he is going to come out of it a millionaire. He still has access to Christopher’s computer and all the stuff he copied and strongly reminds her they are in this together. We noticed he’s not calling her sis anymore. If Rebecca is Cliff’s daughter, wouldn’t she already have lots of dough?

Elena visits John Ross to inform him J.R. swiped Southfork all for himself. She’s obviously gotten over her sorrow over the email accusation. Elena believes John Ross knows all about the deal. Well, he did except for what she just told him. All of a sudden, big tankers are showing up on Southfork as J.R. wastes no time getting ready to drill. Bobby and Christopher have a big argument over fighting clean or dirty. Guess who wants to fight clean?

John Ross visits fake Marta and blames her for the deed ending up in J.R.’s name. She confronts him with the photo evidence J.R. gave her: hugging up on Elena with a water hose in his hand.  Fake Marta says his daddy had him followed, but she warned him not to toy with her affections. He tells her to stay away from him if she knows what’s good for her. He leaves and Marta tearfully watches the sex tape she made of the two of them. She looks at the photo of him with Elena and knows she has a decision to make. She decides to leave John Ross the CD as a gift. Christopher bribes the  doorman to give him the key to John Ross’s condo and finds it on the pillow. He learns fake Marta’s real name when John Ross says: “Veronica, do you like it rough” in the tape.

John Ross runs into J.R.’s “helper” Bum and realizes he’s the one who took the photos of him and Elena, but his mission this time is to deliver John Ross to a football game to see his daddy. J.R. explains that he did not screw John Ross over. The deal was he’d teach him the oil business and he will get Southfork eventually. In the meantime, J.R. has to leave town so he tells John Ross he’s throwing him in the deep end. He gives his son his power of attorney and leaves him Bum to help him out with some sage advice: don’t screw it up and steer clear of fake Marta.

Rebecca implores Ann to meet her in person so she can see in her face that she is sincerely in love with Christopher. Ann obviously believes her but points out the trust factor is badly damaged. No kidding.

John Ross hightails it to Southfork. Uncle Bobby is unpacking and John Ross goes into his act that he is a bystander in the War of the Ewing Brothers. In fact, he blames the current situation on Bobby for being stubborn about the drilling in the first place. J.R. would have never got involved otherwise, and he does have that power of attorney and wouldn’t want to throw his uncle out on his ass.

John Ross visits Elena who wants to slam the door in his face but hears him out. He just wants a chance but Elena doesn’t want to be a part of the Ewing battle. Christopher, meantime, is getting drunk. At hoot owl stage, he staggers to Elena’s door and apologizes for the awful things he said. That’s about all he can get out before he passes out on her couch. The next morning Elena gives him something to drink and tells him to get out when he’s done. He again apologizes for saying she would compromise her integrity to get rich. Elena say he knows exactly where her insecurities are and he went there. He hurt her and John Ross has always had her back, and has never ever said anything to hurt her. Christopher has the fake Marta CD in his back pocket, but realizes if he shows her that now,  it could backfire in a big way. He leaves.

Ann has an ace up her sleeve — or maybe not. She goes to see her ex-husband Harris who has a contract with J.R. to move his oil. Ann wants him to cancel it but there is clearly friction between them and Harris loves seeing Ann need something from him. He lets her dangle a bit and she starts to leave but Harris says he’ll do it. He always liked Bobby Ewing and thinks J.R. is a prick. But it will cost Ann a hug. He holds his arms open but we don’t get to see if Ann is selling hugs for Southfork today.

Elena drops in on John Ross while he’s working. He reminds her what a good boss he is. She makes him promise her that he had nothing to do with the shady Southfork transfer. He complies and that’s all it takes for the blouse and shirt to come off.

Christopher is waiting for John Ross to come home, CD in hand. Guess what, John Ross? Your cousin can blackmail people too. Unless John Ross gives him proof that J.R. knew about the fake transfer, Christopher will turn the CD over to the authorities and John Ross will be cooling his heels in the slammer for fraud instead of knocking boots with Elena.

    that’s a good point that Rebecca would have money if she was Cliff’s daughter, although it’s possible Tommy doesn’t know she’s Cliff’s daughter if they’re not really siblings
