WHAT IS THE BRICKYARD?

In 1909, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway racetrack was paved with 3.2 million bricks. The venue was nicknamed “The Brickyard” even before the job was finished. In 1938, the track was paved over with asphalt except for a 36-inch strip, one yard of the original bricks. It is called the “Yard of Bricks”.

When Dale Jarrett won the 1996 Brickyard 400, he and his crew chief Todd Parrott walked over to the start/finish line, knelt and kissed the “Yard of Bricks”, starting a tradition that continues to this day.
