Eagles Defeat Cowboys in NFL Season Opener

The Philadelphia Eagles opened their championship defense at home against NFC East rival Dallas on September 4th, and it was a good start to the season for the Super Bowl champs.

QB Jalen Hurts rushed for 62 yards and two touchdowns, and had 19 pass completions in 23 attempts in leading the Eagles to a 24-20 win over the Cowboys. Javonte Williams rushed for two touchdowns for the Cowboys, who were playing their first game since trading all universe pass rusher Micah Parsons to Green Bay. There was an inadvertent counter move by the Eagles, when defensive tackle Jalen Carter spit on Dallas QB Zak Prescott before the first play from scrimmage. Carter was tossed out of the game.

The Cowboys essentially matched the Eagles in the first half. The score was tied at 7 after the first quarter, and Philadelphia had a 21-20 lead at the half. After that it became a game of the defenses, as the only scoring was a 58 yard third quarter field goal by Philadelphia’s Jake Elliot, overshadowing an earlier 53 yarder by the Cowboys’ Brandon Aubrey. The second half also featured a 65 minute lightning delay.

Dallas will face another division rival next weekend, hosting the New York Giants on September 14th. Philadelphia will have a rematch of the Super Bowl the same day, playing the Chiefs in Kansas City. The Eagles beat the Chiefs 40-22 in Super Bowl LIX, ending Kansas City’s quest for a third consecutive Super Bowl championship, so the atmosphere will be electric to say the least.
