Raphael Devers Hits Home Run In Red Sox Sweep of Yankees, is Then Traded to San Francisco

The Boston Red Sox have been stumbling around in the first 2 ½ months of the 2025 season, but Father’s Day weekend they put it together and swept the AL East front running New York Yankees in a three game set in Fenway Park.

In the series finale on June 15th, Red Sox starter Brayan Bello pitched eight innings of shutout ball, out dueling Yankee ace Max Fried, and Raphael Devers hit a home run to lead the Red Sox to a 2-0 victory and the series sweep. Devers was then traded to the San Francisco Giants for pitchers Kyle Harrison and Jordan Hicks plus two minor leaguers. Devers just happens to lead the Red Sox in batting average (.272), home runs (15) and RBIs (58). The Giants are just two games out of first place in the NL West, but are in need of offense and Devers is one who can fill that need.

Earlier this season, Devers was asked to move from third base to first base, a request he rejected out of hand. The Red Sox had acquired former Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman in the off season; Bregman is still a good hitter (.299, 11 HR, 35 RBIs in 51 games) and is a better fielder than Devers, thus the move. Devers did agree to be the DH for the club, and that’s where he’s been up to this point. But the Red Sox front office did not like the rather acrimonious way Devers handled the matter, and decided to get rid of him even if it blows a significant hole in their offense.

The Red Sox improved to 37-36 on the season, and have won eight of their last 10. They’re 6 ½ behind the Yankees and are a ½ game behind in the Wild Card standings. With plenty of season left, the Sox have a decent shot at the playoffs, but we’ll see if trade this negatively affects them.
