WHAT IS THE GOLDEN HORDE?

From Timewise Traveller: “Tamerlane (or Timur), a Turkoman Mongol, having taken control of his native Transoxania (now Uzbekistan) by 1370, then launched upon a massive and brutal campaign of conquest…. His fighting included a running battle with the Golden Horde. He eventually caught up with the Mongol army in 1395 and defeated it on the Kur River. It never recovered.”

According to the New World Encyclopedia, the Golden Horde’s name “is believed to have come from the steppe color system for the cardinal directions: black = north, blue = east, red = south, white = west, and yellow (or gold) = center. Another theory that is now considered apocryphal claimed a magnificent golden tent erected by Batu Khan on the Volga River inspired the name. Prior to the 17th century, written docuuments allude to the Golden Horde as Ulus of Jochi. The Golden Horde was also referred to as Kipchak Khanate or Qipchaq Khanate in medieval documents.

Jennifer went with the Mongol Empire. She bet and lost her whole $7,200.

David got it right. He added $209 and finished with $17,609.

Amy also got it right. She bet $17,500 and won the game with $35,100. Amy advances to the finals. Jennifer and David each won $10,000
