Final Jeopardy: Famous Americans (7-10-24)
Today’s Final Jeopardy question (7/10/2024) in the category “Famous Americans” was:
In his 1999 memoir he wrote, “I had been shot down a short walk’s distance from the French-built prison, Hoa Lo”
5x champ Isaac Hirsch, a customer support team lead from Burbank, CA, has now won $120,187. In Game 6, he takes on these two players: Alex Pribil, a fundraiser from Orlando, FL; and Larry P. Wellington, an entrepreneur from Madison, MS.

Isaac found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Rough Times in the City” under the $1,000 clue on the 3rd pick of the round. He was in the lead with $1,400, nobody else was on the board. Isaac made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.
On Dec. 14th, 1825 the Decembrist Revolt in this port city sought to end serfdom: harshly, forcefully, serfdom did not end show

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
WHO IS JOHN McCAIN?
In 1999, Random House published Senator John McCain’s memoir “Faith of My Fathers”. It includes his experiences as a POW during the Vietnam War. In 1967, McCain landed in Truc Bach Lake in Hanoi, Vietnam after his plane was shot down. He was taken to Hoa Loa Prison, aka the Hanoi Hilton. McCain spent the next 5.5 years as a POW and was released in 1973. See this timeline of McCain’s life for more details. Per David Coleman’s website, the Vietnamese government tore down most of the Hanoi Hilton, preserving only a corner of the prison as a museum. The flight suit and parachute that John McCain was wearing when he was captured is on display there.
John McCain has some history with Jeopardy! as well. He read a Final Jeopardy! clue during Power Players week in May of 2004 (when ex-NJ Gov. Christie Todd Whitman embarrassed New Jersey big-time). McCain was also a one-day Jeopardy! champ in 1975. He never forgot that he lost his second game because he couldn’t remember Cathy’s true love’s name in “Wuthering Heights”.
Alex bet $4,000 and finished with $9,600.
Larry bet $6,201 and finished with $16,801.
Isaac bet $4,401 and won the game with $21,201. Isaac’s 6-day total is $141,388.

FJ came to me pretty quickly, as I’m sure it did the players. One of those rare nights when I hit the 3 DDs and Final. Decent challengers, but I was disappointed a bit when Alex didn’t know where the Aswan Dam is. Someone should have known the canoe, or taken a guess at the Founding Father. The sheep-owned gambling den wasn’t that impossible. And last I checked, Nissan is not a South Korean company.
I can’t remember the last time I had pumpernickel bread but I’m pretty sure it was a Reuben. (Filed under clues that trigger food cravings)
I was 3/3 on DD and got FJ, too.
Alex seemed rather blasé on his DDs, and just blurted out his responses. Seemed too casual, to me. Maybe a little more considered.
