Final Jeopardy: Notable American Women (6-28-24)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (6/28/2024) in the category “Notable American Women” was:

In her autobiography she tells of a rather “singular coincidence”, that one of her Swiss ancestors was a teacher of the deaf

7x champ Drew Basile, a graduate student from Birmingham, MI, is rolling right along. He increased his winning to $129,601 yesterday. In Game 8, he competes against: Andrew Fox, a clinical psychologist from Robbinsdale, MN; and Cat Pisacano, a nurse from New York, NY.

Round 1 Categories: Literary Geography – Alliteration – TV Catchphrases – College Newspapers – “B” Wear – The Dogs

Drew found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Alliteration” under the $600 clue on the 4th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $200, $800 more than Andrew and Cat who were tied in second place. Drew bet $1,000 and has no answer. That was WRONG.

For the 2022 album from Death Cab for Cutie, it’s the song “Asphalt Meadows” show

Cat finished in the lead with $3,400. Andrew was second with $200 and Drew was last with negative $1,400. All clues were shown.

Round 2 Categories: Ancient Names – Stuff About States – Greek Myth: Women & Goddesses – Internet Celebrities – AFI’s Greatest Villains – Teen-Letter Words

Drew found the first Daily Double in “Ancient Sayings” under the $1,200 clue on the 17th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $8,600, $4,800 more than Cat in second place. Drew bet $3,000 and came up with Aesop. That was WRONG.

His “Sayings” begin: “The master said, to learn and then do, is not that a pleasure?” show

Drew found the last Daily Double in “Stuff About States” under the $1,200 clue on the 20th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $9,200 now, $5,400 more than Cat in second place. Drew bet $2,000 and said Florida. That was WRONG.

When this state joined the Union in 1812, it was the only one with a non-English speaking majority show

Drew finished in the lead with $9,600. Cat was second with $5,800 and Andrew was last with $600. All clues were shown.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS HELEN KELLER?

Have you ever noticed that the correct response to a clue referencing a part of a book is generally found on the first or second page? Helen Keller recounts her family’s history in the 4th paragraph of her autobiography. It begins with these 2 sentences:

“The family on my father’s side are descended from Caspar Keller, a native of Switzerland, who settled in Maryland. One of my Swiss ancestors was the first teacher of the deaf in Zurich and wrote a book on the subject of their education — rather a singular coincidence.”

Here’s a link to Part I of “The Story of My Life” by Helen Keller.

Andrew got it right. He doubled his score to $1,200.

Cat got it, too. She bet $5,700 and finished with $11,500.

Drew thought it was Gallaudet, who founded the first American school for the deaf. He lost $8,399 and finished with $1,201. What a brutal game that was but Cat Pisacano emerged as the new Jeopardy! champ. We’ll see Cat next Monday, and we’ll see Andrew in the next Tournament of Champions.

Final Jeopardy (6/28/2024) Drew Basile, Andrew Fox, Cat Pisacano

Congratulations Drew on winning 7 games. Not many people can say they accomplished winning that many games on Jeopardy. This young man just came off of Survivor before appearing on Jeopardy. All of this while in graduate school at Oxford must have taken a lot out of him. From my experience with graduate students they think they can multitask but life has a way of proving otherwise. What convinced me Drew was exhausted was the incorrect Michigan State response for the Daily Trojan given that he’s from Michigan. I knew he knew better. One thing about college students, especially grad students, they know their colleges because they have spent so much time researching different ones to attend. Having said this, my conclusion is that Drew was exhausted. When people who have accomplished their own careers in life criticize young people who are working hard at trying to establish their very first career I often wonder if they forgot what it was like when they were young and tried different things in order to become successful. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Well said. When Drew said Michigan State, I thought he had temporary brain freeze and was thinking Spartan instead of Trojan. I gave him a pass on that one. It will all depend on the opponents and the categories, but I don’t see him doing well in the ToC vs strong players.

    • Sam in Seattle says:

Amen, brother! My congratulations to Drew also.

  2. Jason says:

Everybody said everything. What a mess! I was a little warmed in my heart when Cat got Lili’uokalani correct.

Yeah, Drew’s FJ wager was, well, I don’t know.

I was 1/3 on DD, and got FJ correct.

  3. Howard says:

What an awful, ugly game. Drew appeared punch-drunk from the get-go. Maybe because it might have been the fifth taping of the day? He got himself squared away in DJ and was headed for a lock game till blowing the DDs, neither of which was easy. I’m glad Cat stayed within reach. Andrew was mired in quicksand the whole game.

Drew over-wagered in FJ, IMO. $2001 would have been sufficient. Maybe he loved the category. Of course it was Helen Keller, although I gave Annie Sullivan a brief nod.

Too many stumpers/wrong answers. Chestnut Hill/Newton were decent hints at the college paper. At least Cat knew my college paper after Drew said Cornell. I wrote a few articles for that publication. Utterly shocked no one knew the Iowa bridge county. Faye Dunaway character and taxi driver were pretty gettable. Sam Spade’s foggy city was obvious. “The morning fog may fill the air; I don’t care.” (Tony Bennett)

    • VJ says:

I thought the DD in the first round was weird and thought it was lucky that Drew could only bet a grand.

I thought the DDs in the last round were easy. By then, Drew should have realized he needed to bet low, considering all the stumpers. “Sayings” should have pointed him to the Ancient Name. When he missed the State Stuff one, I could only think “merde!”

  4. Rick says:

I did poorly in the game, but got the FJ as it was too obvious. Perhaps it was me, but it sure seemed that Drew had deliberately thrown the match.

  5. Ismael Gomez says:

An unimpressive main game. All 3 DDs were missed resulted our tenth skunking. The DDs were not kind to Drew.

  6. William Weyser says:

Drew, all I have to say is “Darn Those Daily Doubles!”. Great run, though. You went from finishing 6th place on “Survivor” last year, to toppling 15-Day Champion: Adriana Harmeyer, to being our most recent tiebreaker winner, to being a definite TOC Player, to being a Lucky 7-Day Champion. With 7 wins and about $130,000, we’ll see you in the Tournament of Champions.

  7. Kevin Cheng says:

Drew’s final score is 1,200. It was a rough game in the beginning with everyone in the red. Drew went 0-3 in the daily doubles. Had he got the first daily double of the game right, he would have had exactly twice Cat’s score heading into Final possibly a potential tiebreaker that happened last Friday. Still congrats to Drew on a wonderful run.

    • Kevin Cheng says:

What I meant to say is Drew’s final score is 1,201 because he wagered to stay above Andrew and not overbet.

      • VJ says:

Yeah, Kevin, I guess I pasted the wrong amount from somewhere. I knew Drew bet to have $1.00 more than Andrew because I was pissed about it. Drew won so much money, he could have let Andrew have that extra grand. Just my opinion.
