Diamondbacks Score 14 Runs in One Inning in Opening Day Win over Rockies

The Arizona Diamondbacks, last season’s National League Champions, opened their 2024 season with a big win at home over the Colorado Rockies on March 28th. Big as in a 16-1 victory.

Arizona scored two runs in the first inning and then scored 14 in the third inning. The Diamondbacks had 13 hits in the third inning, none of which were home runs. They had 10 singles, three doubles, two walks, and one sacrifice fly. There were no errors in the inning. Colorado starter Kyle Freeland was charged with 10 runs (including the two in the first inning) in 2 1/3 innings pitched, so his ERA for the season is 38.57. If you think that’s bad, consider reliver Anthony Molina. He was charged with six earned runs in one third of an inning for an ERA of 162.

Arizona is again expected to contend with the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, and San Francisco Giants in the highly competitive National League West. San Diego is the club most likely to fall short, as they seldom fail to disappoint their fans. The Dodgers spent big money to add free agents like Shohei Ohtani, Tyler Glasnow, and Yoshinobu Yamamoto to an already expensive-and talented-team, and the Giants added two time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell-signing him away from San Diego. Arizona added slugging third baseman Eugenio Suarez to a lineup that includes Christian Walker, Ketel Marte, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and last year’s Rookie of the Year Corbin Carroll. They also signed former Texas Ranger starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery late in spring training.
