WHO IS SARAH (WHEATON)?

Patricia MacLachlan was born and lived in Cheyenne, WY for her first 5 years. After her elementary school years in Rochester, MN, her family relocated to Connecticut. MacLachlan’s early roots made such a strong impression upon her, that she carried a bag of prairie dirt with her as an adult.

Sarah Wheaton is the heroine of MacLachlan’s best known novel, “Sarah, Plain, and Tall” (1985). A native of Maine, Sarah goes West in response to Jacob Witting’s newspaper ad. He is a widower looking to marry up with a woman who can help him raise his two children. In addition to winning the 1986 Newbery Medal, “Sarah, Plain and Tall” won the 1986 Scott O’Dell Award for Historical Fiction that same year.

Four more books would follow the lives of the Witting family. Three film adaptations– “Sarah Plain and Tall” (1991), “Skylark” (1993), and “Sarah, Plain and Tall: Winter’s End” (1999)– starred Glenn Close and Christopher Walken as Sarah and Jacob.

Michael went with “Anne of Green Gables”, which is set in Canada. He lost his $2,000 bet and finished with $3,600.

Xanni had the same response. She lost $1,114 and finished second with
$18,286.

Cris made it unanimous. He didn’t risk any money though, so he won this game with $39,800. Cris Pannullo’s 16-day total is $566,344.

For future reference, Canadian author and poet Lucy Maud Montgomery wrote Anne of Green Gables

Killer FJ. Although Xanni missed it, I’d nominate her for a future 2nd chance tourney.

A little surprised no one knew the famous actor who played Tom Joad. One of his best roles. I got his autograph backstage in 1974 after his 1-man appearance as Clarence Darrow.

  3. Rick says:

A much better FJ than the previous contradictory one to be sure. Although no one came up with the correct response (including me), it was still fair game.

  4. Lou says:

Xanni played an impressive game and now she is looking good for the second chance tournament next year. Happy to see Cris winning this game again. Congrats!

  5. Ismael Gomez says:

Tough final as we got our first triple stumper this week.

  6. Trevor Panno says:

Xanni had a very impressive score and on any other day, she would have been in contention to perhaps become the new champion.

    • Jason says:

Concur, Trevor. She was strong, but, have to credit Cris’ gameplay.

Just like the contestants, I said “Anne of Green Gables”, although I was quite confident that I was wrong. Still, a lights out game! Happy to see it!
