In the last of two final matches in the 2022 Second Chance Tournament (Week 2), the contestants are: Rowan Ward, a chart caller, writer, and editor from Chicago, IL, Jack Weller, a law student orig. from San Diego, CA, and Sadie Goldberger, an interpreter from Columbia, MD.
Yesterday’s final scores (Rowan $30,000 Jack $3,400 Sadie $4,800) will be added to today’s final scores to determine the winner, who moves on to the 2022 Tournament of Champions.

Jack found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “From the Latin” under the $1,200 clue on the 9th pick of the round. He was in second place with $1,800, half of Rowan’s lead. He made it a true Daily Double and was RIGHT.

Rowan finished in the lead with $6,800. Jack was next with $4,800 and Sadie was in third place with $2,600. All clues were shown.

Jack found the first Daily Double in “Myth-Pourri” under the $1,200 clue on the 3rd pick of the round. Jack was in the lead with $7,600, $1,400 more than Rowan in second place. Jack bet $7,000 and was RIGHT.
Allecto, or “unceasing in anger”, was one of the 3 vengeance goddesses really living up to this collective name show
Rowan got the last Daily Double in “Days of Yore” under the $1,600 clue on the 9th pick of the round. Rowan was in second place with $6,400 now, $11,800 less than Jack’s lead. Rowan made it a true Daily Double and was RIGHT.

Jack finished in the lead with $29,400. Rowan was in second place with $20,000 and Sadie was last with $5,000. All clues were shown.

WHO IS RENÉ MAGRITTE?
In 1965, Robert Périer, president of Belgium’s then-national airline, Sabena, commissioned surrealist René Magritte to produce a painting for the company. I’m just speculating here, but the “L’Oiseau de Ciel” was not that big of a stretch for Magritte after his 1963 painting “La Grande Famille”. Périer and Magritte were friends and perhaps the airline president saw the potential for his logo in the earlier work.
Fast forward to 2001: Sabena declared bankruptcy. The company put the now iconic “L’Oiseau de Ciel” on the auction block in order to satisfy its debts to its employees. The painting fetched 3.4 million euros, around three times its reserve price. According to The Guardian, “It is not known how much Sabena paid Magritte, who died two years later, but he was famously reported to have said that it was enough for him to ‘put butter on my spinach.'”
Sadie thought it was Picasso. She bet and lost today’s $5,000, leaving her with yesterday’s $4,800.
Rowan thought it might be Picasso, too. A $12,201 bet left Rowan with $7,799 today plus yesterday’s $30,000 for a $37,799 finish.
Jack was going for Picasso but only got the first two letters out. He lost today’s $29,400 and had yesterday’s $3,400 left. So Rowan Ward won the last spot in the 2022 Tournament of Champions and $35,000. Rowan will be in the fourth quarterfinal next Thursday. Sadie won $20,000 and Jack won $10,000. It was a splendid finale to the Second Chance Tournament. Kudos to Jack for a valiant last stand!

Rowan Ward has a lot of money in Final Game 1, so he won the Second Chance Tournament in Week 2 and qualifies for the Tournament of Champions.
And we end the week with a triple stumper as today’s final wasn’t very nice to anybody.
This tournament was fun and I am happy to see Rowan winning.
I never read the Theodore Dreiser novel that was a TS but I knew it from the 1952 movie with Jennifer Jones as the title gal. (The film just went by her first name.)
Laurence Olivier was the married man who fell hard for her. Miriam Hopkins was incredible as his shrew of a wife (esp by comparison to her role as the flighty aunt in “The Heiress”). I can’t even think of a word to do justice to Olivier’s performance.
The Second Chance Tournament was fun and congrats to Rowan for getting the last spot in the upcoming TOC. What a finale it has been! On Monday we start off the Tournament of Champions with Ryan Long, Megan Wachspress, and Maureen O’Neil.
