San Antonio Spurs’ Gregg Popovich Becomes NBA’s All Time Regular Season Winningest Coach
The San Antonio Spurs outscored the Utah Jazz 40-28 in the fourth quarter to rally for a 104-102 victory on March 11th. While the victory over the Jazz kept the Spurs playoff hopes alive, the win was significant for another reason.
Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich has been at the helm in San Antonio since 1996. He’s won five NBA titles in that time, and obviously, a lot of regular season games. The win over the Jazz was his 1336th regular season victory, passing Don Nelson for the all time lead. All of those victories as head coach have been with the Spurs. Popovich won NBA titles in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2014. In his spare time, he coached the U.S. team in the Tokyo Olympics last summer; that team won the Gold Medal.
Popovich has also been named NBA Coach of the Year three times. At 73, it’s hard to say how much longer “Pops” will keep coaching, but whenever he retires, he can do so knowing he pretty much won everything there was to win.
Here’s some highlights of the exciting finish to the game:
